I'm a noob to this, but here's what I did and it worked (Twice even)1. Put your usb key in a usb port 2. Format it as fat16 3. Put a blank floppy in your floppy drive 4. Open a command prompt 5. Navigate to where you extracted the files 6. Run rawrite2 7. Type bootusb.img and press enter. 8. Type a: and press enter. 9. Press enter 10 Copy all the files off the floppy onto your usb drive root 11 Run mkbt -c a: bootsect.bin 12 Run mkbt -x bootsect.bin E: (If E is your usb key's drive letter. BE 100% SURE as this overwrites the boot sector on that drive) 13 Copy files from dsl-1.2.1.iso to your usb drive Notes: To get files from the iso I use winrar (www.rarlabs.com) To open a command window go to start>run and type command. To navigate in dos use cd to get from your current folder to a subfolder. (E.g. CD folder) All files mentioned here are in this zip: < http://www.freewebs.com/pockybum522/DSLUSBTutorial.zip > Posted by hmoner on June 29 2005,17:18
Great tip !I suppose this tutorial is for making DSL boot from USB drive.. But what about running DSL from usb drive, but by booting the usb drive from QEMU ? I mean, in the DSL website, a usb pen drive is offered, which includes DSL and something to run it in Windows without rebooting the machine... this is what i want... da ya know where to find a tut - howto for this ? thanks Posted by cbagger01 on June 30 2005,01:59
It's called DSL Embedded. It is possible to have a DSL USB install that has both the USB boot capability AND the QEMU Windows capability, but you need to download and run the 5-way install script from the DSL download site. Posted by hmoner on June 30 2005,02:28
