I've run across a confusing (and frustrating) problem with printing.

I have no problem configuring our printer and printing when booting off the CD, but when I boot off my frugal USB install (both using 1.2.1) the install works but I am unable to print any documents. I *am* able to print the test page though.

Details: HP LaserJet 5si MX on a local network, printing to direct IP address. DSL 1.2.1 Frugal USB-ZIP install on a 256 MB thumb drive.

I've checked all the obvious stuff: it isn't that my filetools.lst isn't set up right (I've tried both with an without saving the /opt/apsfilter director) my lpt demon is running and I've forced a reload after doing a reconfigure.

Frankly I'm completely stumped. Any suggestions?

More information...I just dug out an old USB drive and installed 1.2.1 USB-ZIP install (frugal of necessity, since it's a 64MB drive). Booting on the same machine and I AM able to print.  I'm going to back up my other drive and completely reinstall and see if that works.

Problem resolved...sort of.

After many, many, many small modifications to a working system I have narrowed the problem down to a modified ace.dsl extenstion.

I had modified the ace.dsl to exclude some of the games I never play by renaming it to ace.tar.gz, and modified it using Emelfm's built in extraction and repacking abilities, then changing the name back. As far as I know all I did was remove some executables and modify the menu file.

I have a copy of the problem file if anyone is interested in trying to narrow the problem down further. Note that a clean, freshly downloaded ace.dsl causes no problems.

I expect there's something fairly simple going on related to the way the .tar.gz extensions work versus the .dsl extensions.
