I am having the exact same problem. I think that installation to a usb drive is completely broken. The usb key boot correctly and the logo is shown. Then it goes through the process of loading the usb modules, and then the kernel panics because programs such as cp and awk could not be found. The file KNOPPIX/KNOPPIX on the usb key will absolutely not mount no matter what I have tried. So any ideas if the installation is broken? I have also tried installing it as a usb-zip but same result.

I got same result. Kernel panic.  Tried both on usbzip, usbhdd

It seems to me that your KNOPPIX file must be corrupted somehow.

Try manually copying the /KNOPPIX/KNOPPIX file over from your CDROM to your USB key and overwrite the original file and then try booting again.

I too, am having the exact problem as shown in the above screenshot.  I did the overwrite of the Knoppix file from my live-CD to my USB drive, but it still has the same problem.

Would this be a problem with this version of DSL?

I was having the same problem...Here is how I fixed it.  Copy the knoppix/knoppix file as mentioned.  Then chmod the file to 755 (matching the original USB file).  The file on the CDROM is not executable but I guess it needs to be when on the pen drive.  Hope this helps.

"Then chmod the file to 755 (matching the original USB file)"

Can you explain in detail how this is done?  I am an absolute beginner with DSL and Linux looking to move over from Windoze.

Thanks.

I think he means this:

1) Boot up DSL from livecd
2) Plug the USB drive into the computer and wait a few seconds.
3) Open a terminal window and type:

sudo su
mount -t vfat /dev/sda1 /mnt/sda1
chmod 755 /mnt/sda1/knoppix/knoppix

OR maybe:
chmod 755 /mnt/sda1/KNOPPIX/KNOPPIX
sync
umount /dev/sda1
exit
exit

That is correct cbagger.  Sorry about that lack of detail.

I typed those commands and it didn't seem to do anything. Can someone post screenshots or can I just copy the file in Windows?
Posted by WaspX on Aug. 12 2005,05:01
here i post the screenshot :)

and let me write my way to fix that :

1. boot DSL from CD
2. open XTerm
3. type this command at the $ prompt:

$ sudo su
# mount -t vfat /dev/sda1 /mnt/sda1
# cp /cdrom/KNOPPIX/KNOPPIX /mnt/sda1/knoppix/knoppix
# chmod 755 /mnt/sda1/knoppix/knoppix
# sync
# exit
$ exit

4. try to reboot the computer, eject the cdrom, set the bios to boot from USB.

Good luck....

How did you get that screenshot?

I tried that but it does not seem to work.... Let me try again......

I'm also having this problem and the "fix" doesn't work, probably because "chmod" doesn't work on FAT partitions.

Anyone else have any ideas? I've been working on this for a few days now with no luck =/

GOT IT! It seems like this is a common issue, so it's sad that the solution is not documented ???
If you're having this issue, you need to disable USB 2.0 support in your BIOS so that your flash drive will boot up as a USB 1.x device. It's kind of sad that I've spent 3 days on this and that was all I need to do :p.
