When you use the smalll irc client that comes with DSL, it just makes the default login name "DSL" so people in the damnsmalllinux channel can recognize that the person who just hopped in is using DSL.  You will probably show up as DSLxxxxx where xxxxx is some number on the end depending on how many folk are trying to use the default irc nick.  Once in irc, you can change your name via the command "/nick newnick".  You could also change the IRCNICK=newnick to have it the newnick on boot.
