DSL on iPod NanoForum: USB booting Topic: DSL on iPod Nano started by: WiseBuddha Posted by WiseBuddha on Oct. 25 2005,23:06
Does anybody know if it is possible to install a bootable DSL on an iPod Nano whilst retaining usual iPod functionality?I have come across this execellent tutorial that has helped me out before installing onto "normal" usb media devices: < http://fuzzymunchkin.dyndns.org/tdot/usbkeyfob/index.php > But I have heard rumourings from the dark shadows that you have to hack about with the ipod config to get it to work. Something the link above doesnt cover. Posted by Your Fuzzy God on Oct. 26 2005,16:19
I don't know a lot about the ipod, but I am about 99% sure it is not x86 based. Therefore it would not be able to run DSL. Sorry, Posted by MethodOne on Oct. 27 2005,16:05
WiseBuddha meant that he wants to use the iPod as a USB storage device and load DSL from it.

Ahh, then it seems that WiseBuddha has asked a question that is far beyond the knowledge of Your Fuzzy God.

If the Nano can function as a "USB Mass Storage Device" (IE: without additional drivers in Windows 2000 or Windows XP), then it can probably be cajoled into booting DSL.HOWEVER, if you don't know what you are doing, you might accidentally delete some "iPOD critical" data files on the device and render it unusable unless it is possible to "reformat" the ipod using a push button or a special program like iTunes, for example. I don't own an iPOD or a iPOD Nano, so all I can do is speculate here. |
