Hi, some help for a novice please!

Im turning my old laptop into a digital pic frame and DSL looks the business for it.

OK, got a 128Mb compact flash installed as a hard drive (two partitions) and managed to get it booting and running from this.  :D  Well done me!

Now i'd like to install some slideshow software such as feh or QIV.  Any better suggestions?

Then i'd like to save my settings, for this it seems i should specify the second partition on the CF disk for this (HDA2).  Will it backup and restore automatically at shutdown and boot? I understand it will save on shutdown automatically things like screen res, mouse and keyb language but where do I specify the 'cheat code' so its restores everytime?

Also do i just edit the .xinitrc file to add the slideshow software command line options once i've installed it?

Im sure this has all been done before but im a complete novice.  Yes I have searched!

Thanks!

Make is included in the gcc package available through the mydsl panel.  < Here > you will find instructions on turning DSL into a digital picture frame OS.  The instructions are for a standard HDD install, so you can't follow them exactly, but hopefully they will lead you in the right direction.

Thanks, I've downloaded through "apt-get install feh" and it runs a treat.  How do I save feh and all of the dependencies so they are available after a reboot?  Can I chose to install them to HDA2 as aposed to the ramdisk?

I am doing the same thing right now.  Only I have trimmed down DSL + Unclutter + Xv to where it will fit on a 32MB CF Flash (frugal install).  I have scripts that scan the USB drives for pictures and then displays then either sequentially or randomly, and for a configurable time.

Yes, all you have to do is call the viewer (xv, feh, qiv) from .xinitrc.  You will also want to use unclutter to make the cursor disappear and set the fluxbox settings so the slits are "autohide" and noicons.

I got a few (four) 32MB CF cards for $3.99 at KMart this morning.

Can anyonehelp me a bit ore with this.

maybe I chose to do a hard drive installation and get everthing downloaded and running.  Then can I force it to load into RAM and make the disk readonly so as to preserve its life?

Is that the way around it?
