Try typing "dsl 2" at the boot prompt.

There are other cheatcodes that may help X run on a slower machine, for example "Minimal."  Hit F2 or F3 at the boot prompt to see all the possibilities.

If you have the ability to use backup/restore, I'd edit /home/dsl/.bash_profile and use that instead of runlevel 2.  Comment out the "startx" line and you'll have your text mode while still being automatically logged in as dsl instead of root.

for some reason I cant find that file in emelfm and when I use the restore it asks for a server to log into which I have none. the F2 , F3 at the boot screen doesnt do anything. any other ideas? like a file in the DSL directory I could edit like a boot.cfg or something?

Its a hidden file so click the "H" in emelfm in order to see hidden files with that file manager.
