I have been working with Uncle Billy (Windows) for at least a decade, so my knowledge of Linux is lame. I just downloaded DSL and it brought me back to my only Unix course I have taken and I love it! I read a post about how to save your DSL config but it sounded all greek to me. Saving the config is easy. You just open the DSLpanel and click the backup/restore button, and enter where to backup and restore. You will need a writeable partition to send it to, like a FAT formatted partition or any Linux formatted partition. Pen drives make grat backup devices. NTFS formatted hard drives won't work because DSL won't write to it. To restore on bootup you just type at the boot prompt : dsl restore=[the name of your backup file location] Linux names things differently from Windows too, so be aware of that. hda is normally the name of your first hard drive with hda1 being the first primary partition on that drive. The first pendrive is normally called sda1. To write to them they need to be mounted. The script that is behind the backup/restore button in the DSLpanel does that automatically when you choose a location. However, if you decide to save something to a location manually, then you need to mount it. You can do that by navigating to the device under the directory /mnt using the EmelFM file manager. For example, open EmelFM and you should see a list of directories, one of which is /mnt. Double click on /mnt and you will see all of the available devices. If you have a pen drive plugged in it will be listed as sda1. Right click on sda1 and pick "mount" from the menu list. The device will open up and show you it's contents. the backup file is called backup.tar.gz, so that, at least, should be in there.
