I was wondering if there was a way to start DSL other than through the batchfile/MSDOS as DOSprompts are disabled at my school and I want to run it there at lunchtimes for MSN and to get past the overly restrictive filters.

Sounds like you need help from a MSWindows guru, so I would search the net for Windows help.

But in my opinion, it is not a good idea to defeat your school's network and computing policies.

If someone either walks in the room and observes your behavior, or if it is detected via network analysis tools, you could get suspended or expelled depending on if you have strict authorities.

There are some old dos based programs bat2exe and bat2com that I used back in the mid 90s they are probably freeware or shareware.  Those might help, however I share cbagger01's opinion and post this merely for intructional purposes.

Or reboot the computer from a DSL cd, perhaps with a "fromhd=/dev/sda1 qemu frugal" cheatcode?

While I agree with what has been said above about attempting to circumvent your school network, I provide this information and suggest you do the right thing.

Here is a small, simple program that will convert the batch file that calls DSL embedded into an executable (.exe) file. I was looking at it some time ago with the same idea.

Open a web viewer and in the address bar type in file://d:\dsl.bat or where ever it is. This command my also work in the address bar d:\dsl.bat should open a new window and have you in business. The machines are probably screwed down tighter then you know, and in this case I will bet money that the school will know you tried to bypass security. The schools here kick them out, two were in the paper this year alone.

Its ok to know how, it is NOT ALWAYS OK to use that knowledge.

Desnotes,
as usual you're a goldmine.
I'll look at the program and will give you a feedback.
My understanding is that any Qemu visual managers, provided they work (and they need admin rights, don't they), should open qemu without a batch.
The problem is, I tried them all, including Mimiek, and I cannot get them to work. Any ideas?

How limited is your access where you are ruinning into this problem? My work laptop is locked down to a degree that I cannot use Samba between the host and guest OS because I cannot share any directories on my laptop. But otherwise I am able to install QEMU and run the various batch files. I have not tried any of the various QEMU GUI's so cannot comment on those.

@desnotes

Usually I can run batch files. SOme cheap webcafes (easyeverything, a well known network in Europe) run a hacked Windows image and won't allow running batch files.

@300cPilot

No, they are actually smarter than that, this trick doesn't work

That is interesting but not surprising about the batch files. Let me know if converting the file to an .exe will help, but I suspect they may not allow that either. I think that running embedded DSL on cafe-type, school and library computers would be great as it keeps viruses away from the host computer.

Yeah, "stop them viruses".  That's why everyone is trying to get DSL running on their school/library computers. :laugh:

If you believe that I've got a nice bridge in Brooklyn to sell you.

This seams to be growing into a challenge... Try naming your bat file to ###.xxx, Just maybe windows will ask you what you want to do with it, and offer to run it.

If Excel is loaded you may also be able to call it through a VB script.

I am out of guesses

Wow! Found the solution, at least for me:

< http://www.davereyn.co.uk/qem/setupqemuk22.exe >

It integrates QEMU, kqemu and qvm86 in one bundle.

The host is a pathetic Win98 whose command line stack has been blown away to avoid custom scripts, but the qemu manager handles it beautifully.

If I can find one defect is that the manager says that kqemu is enabled while 'info kqemu' says it is disabled, but maybe this is a specific issue with win98, I'll probably post on the Qemu forum or the dev-mailing list.

Now I feel like replacing the standard qemu on the memory stick and try this manager with WinXp and see if I have any improvements.

I lauch dsl-windows.bat from Windows Explorer.  If you can't get an explorer window just open the save or open menu from any program they let you use and use that to explore to your DSL folder then just right-click or double click to start DSL.

If the admins have removed cmd.exe from the system then put a copy of from your home computer in the same folder as your DSL.

I too urge you to do no evil with your powers. -cdr
