Hello all,

I am completely new in the Linux world. So I don't know very mutch about working with Linux OS.
I have tried the DSL-Embedded and I can run the linux OS on my windows 2000.

What my problem is, is that I can't see the other files that I have on my harddrive. I'm using a USB External HDD and run DSL also from there. I have some files that I want to have them in my Linux OS too. How can I do that, because I don't see any other "own" maps in the filebrowser of the Linux Os.

Other question is: What are files with the extension .tar.gz and how can I open them on my linux system (eventually also install them)?

I can't help much with the first question, other than to say that DSL embedded runs on emulated hardware, so you apparently cannot access your machine's real hardware directly. I believe there is a way to use an emulated harddrive which will store your data files, and you can access Windows' shared directories through the use of Samba. Hopefully someone else will be along to verify and give you more assistance with this.

A *.tar.gz file is a compressed (gzipped) tar file...similar to a zip file in windows. What's inside the archive will determine what you'd do with it. If it's a myDSL extension, for example, you'd use mydsl-load to install it. If it's an application source archive, you will need to add some development tools to DSL in order to do anything more than read the code. If you just want to extract it, use the command "tar xzf filename".

To access the files from your host (Windows) computer, you need to download LinNeighborhood(samba.dsl). I suggest you read the DSL wiki to become familiar with the process of activating a myDSL app and then try out LinNeighborhood. Once you have it set up, you will be able to pass file backand forth from your DSL embedded and your host computer.
