Which tool(s) do you have for burning?

According to this post:

if i understand correctly then you just have to write over the ISO
file to the blank card.

i have NERO to burn but can i burn right to the CF card with that i could not figure that out before becuase the CD ROM isn't burnable on this particular machine

IAN442, You can not burn image file to CF card directly. You need to burn iso image file to CD-R or CD-RW first.
After that, boot from DSL CD, use cfdisk in aterm as root for CF disk partitioning, then Format partition(s).
Reboot from DSL CD and run Frugal Install.

Now that i understand. - question when i open aterm does it log me in as root ?

sorry im very new at this and im trying to revive compaq ia-1's

You can see the different on promt: $ is for user (DSL) and # is for root. You can use:-
Code Sample
# cfdisk
or
Code Sample
$ sudo cfdisk

Both will run cfdisk as root. Good luck  :D

i try to run cfdisk since im running DSL off a CD-RW

i got to aterm - now it says fatal error. the cf disk is connected via usb and is totally clean.

backup here... i connected the CF disk with an IDE reader. each time i did a command like formatting or writing the partitions i'd reboot the DSL, then go to install and it would proceed only to toss me a GRUB 1.5 load error. :(

Hi,
I don't exactly know your hardware specifications, but here one possible idea:

1. try to run cfdisk in 'dsl init 2' mode (type it at prompt);
2. partition your CF-Card in two partition (hda1 bootable and hda5 logical f.ex.); no swaps becaus it could damage your card;
3. once this done, restart DSL off of the CD;
3. then install DSL on the first partition of your CF from your CD-RW; an advice: choose the frugal install, there are a lot of good experiences with it and CF cards.

Hope it will help a bit.
yours

There's no real need to write two partitons, unless you will want to make persistant /home and /opt on the second partition to save when you update DSL later on. The partition(s) need to be Linux ext2 partitions for DSL to work. Frugal grub install works great for me. Make sure you pick the i for install and not the u for update. That way a new grub configuration file will be written and you will not get the grub error.
