thinkpad 600e 300mb ram

usually on a cd boot i need to change to xvesa in xsetup.sh but then all is fine (and insmod sound drivers but thats not a problem)

the qemu window opens and dsl boots, text is hard to read , eventually x opens and only takes 1/3rd of the window, all functions seem to work and ive even run synaptic thrugh memorising the menu positions as the text is illegible.

Very strange! What color depth are you selecting? If it is hig, try lowering it some and seeif that works.

Yes,

Definitely switch your MSWindows Display color depth to "16 bit color" and reboot and try again.
