Hi,
can somebody tell me how to access hard or CD drives out of the DSL emulated by Qemu under Windows?

Thanks a lot!

If you want to access your Windows drives, you'll want to first share the target drives/folders over your network. Then, download and install the Samba MyDSL Extension. Once you open the Samba program, its just a matter of entering your host computer's workgroup, IP address, the name of your shared area. Also, it will likely help to choose the option of "open as another user". Something like that anyway. With that option, you'll use your Windows User and Pass, and then once you select the shared folder, Samba will mount it as a folder in your filesystem.

Sorry if I was a bit hard to follow, but it's been a while since I've used Samba myself. If you need any more help, just ask!  :laugh:

Oh, one more very important thing! Make sure that you unmount the shares before you shutdown... otherwise the system will hang when backing up to hdb. I'm not entirely sure about whether that's true for every setup, but its been doing that for me every time. I think the backup system has been trying to save my mounted shares, which are definitely too big to fit in the tiny virtual drive. I'm pretty sure there exists a simple way to fix this, like editing a config file to exclude the mounted shares. I just need to look around.

Hi,
thanks for your advice, but I don't know how to install the samba extension without accessing my hard drive.

Thats easy! Simply open the MyDSL panel, click "Net", and look through the list for "Samba". Thats how you install pretty much all the MyDSL extensions. They're installed automatically if you download them that way.

@colonel-panic

I can't find an entry called "Net" in my DSL-Panel. Have a look:

Thanks a lot for your help!

If you are still keen on doing it through samba instead of accessing the drive directly,
access 'Net' through myDSL, _not_ DSLPanel

Hi,
oops, right. I have found the MyDSL Panel, downloaded and installed the samba extension. I was really amazed that it actually worked immediately with the host OS's internet connection. I almost couldn't believe it.  But I don't know what to do with and how to use samba. Can anyone tell me this?

Thanks!

Set your host/windows machine to share files & folders.

Use Lineighborhood for a gui to set up samba to mount the network share.
