Yeah, how do you get it back to displaying icons? And how do you get root on this system?

In the Fluxbox Menu,

Desktop->Icons Only (check it anyway something with icons name)

option is there . use it to toggle icons for yes and no.

sudo su

is the command which takes you to root prompt without any password.

You can also run commands with root previleiges as

sudo command

in your user prompt.
