Is it possible to modify the knoppix disk image itself?  It is mounted as ro but I want to be able to remove things like FF, Xpaint, and so forth then install libc6, networking tools, etc.

Has someone created a tutorial to do exactly this?

See knoppix/dsl image remastering.

I've seen a couple tutorials but they all generate into ISOs.  How do you get that back into a disk image that QEMU can understand?

Well to package it, one might use take the extra step to put it into a cd image - leave out that step and just use the dsl image.

Not to mention, btw, that qemu can also read iso's.
