when i set up xfree86 then restart the whole thing, xfree86 gives me this message:
"server error: no screens found."
why am i getting this?

Did you set up the XF86Config-4 configuration file for your hardware? This error message sounds like it comes from a mistake in the configuration file.

no, i just used the example vesa to try to get it working(no modifications). i did however look at the file to see if i could modify it, but it looks a bit complicated

If you google on xf86config-4 and the name of your graphics card, you will probably find an example config file you can use more or less verbatim

nope no luck. i have an ati radeon 9550 agp card w/256mb
couldnt find a radeon 9550 config file anywhere. only thing i found was driver setup on the ati page for linux, but im not sure that would help.
also have usb mouse.

i followed them, though i noticed my xf86config-4 folder disappears after i restart... well here are the directions i followed:

this package contains the XFree86 X-server,
many video and input drivers. openGL drivers
driver info: < http://www.xfree86.org/4.3.0/Status.html >
THIS IS NOT A CLICK AND PLAY PACKAGE. you need to add 2 files
1. CHANGE /home/dsl/.xserverrc to:
exec /usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86 -nolisten tcp
****(copy included in /home/dsl/XFree86_config_files)****
2. CREATE a /etc/X11/XF86Config-4: the content of this file
depends on the hardware you have. you can find examples of
such file all over the internet (use google). i have some
on < http://home.zonnet.nl/henk.1955 >
this does NOT remove the DSL KDrive ( the small XServer)
if the XFree86 wont start, you can type: xsetup.sh to get the DSL-X back.
then try to correct the error in XF86Config-4
(****There are several working XF86Config-4 files in
the included home/dsl/XFree86_config_files directory..
Start with the XF86Config-4_vesa version first****)
Thanks to Henk1955 for the kickstart and contribution
and SaidenUnleashed for testing it on ATI/Radeon hardware

xf86config-4 is the actual file, not a folder...

now how do i set up my usb mouse with it??? my mouse doesnt move..

- it is not a folder... if you are using a preconfigured one, copy the plaintext file to there.
- it's on your ramdisk

Set your mouse device to "/dev/mouse" in your config file (i.e. by editing with a text editor, or the config program)

lol, same time. thats it, just /dev/mouse? you dont have to reference a usbmouse driver anywhere or mess with the imps/2 protocol any?

Nope. You might edit the "buttons" entry if you got more than 5 (left, right, wheel down, wheel up, pressed wheel)

new problem, xfree86 only works after i set everything up adn exit the windos manager then start it up again, it seems to read the file fine, but doesn't on restart. its like the file commits suicide when the program tries to read it. my file just disappears from its location... here is my config file:

nope still no luck , i have the the text file in ect/x11 and xserverrc set up. do i dont know where i am going wrong

Yes, you'll have to save it and restore it by either copying it (i.e. with cp in a startup script, or in like in a mydsl extension)

still kinda strange though. if i jsut put the config file there, and restartdsl the file is still there, but if i modify xserverrc to what it should be for xf86 on next reboot after the whole file error thing, the config file disappears...
