Posted by agashka on Aug. 25 2008,00:19Hi, im bsically new to linux, im trying to flix the switch slowly. So i've tried to put DSL on my old p1 laptop (syslinux, boot from hd) (give it a second live) but I can only boot in Failsafe and select a resolution of 640x480 in 4bit, anything else cause the laptop to make a greenscreen and never boot.
I've tried puppy linux, and it appear I can boot with Xorg at 1024x768 witch is nice.
My laptop is a Thinkpad 760ED with 2mb of videoram i Beleive. (133mhz, 65mb ram, 2GB hd to be replaced with 512mb CF)
Would compiling Xorg for DSL be a good choice?
I've found a guide on google, but it seems rather complexe since I've never compiled anything on linux (im noob)

Posted by curaga on Aug. 25 2008,13:49It's a Trident chip, so you could also try Xtrident.tar.gz from testing, since it's a way smaller download and probably easier to set up.
Posted by agashka on Aug. 26 2008,01:58Is there any quick instructiomns I could follow to get it working? I'm using the Embedded package though.
Posted by curaga on Aug. 26 2008,16:09No matter where the files came from, they are the same. So your current install is pretty much a frugal one.
So, after getting the extension loaded, open up .xserverrc (a hidden file) in your favorite editor, and change "/usr/whatever/Xvesa" to "/opt/bin/Xtrident" (leave the options after the path there).
Then just get out of X (exit to prompt) and type startx to get the new X server.
For backup & persistence (saving settings) check the wiki.
Posted by agashka on Aug. 27 2008,05:16No, i don't have it installed, no frugal thing, all i did is copy the files from the CDrom to the HDD and make it bootable with syslinux.
Posted by curaga on Aug. 27 2008,12:13Well, you did a manual frugal install
The scripts from livecd only copy files and make it bootable, just like you did. Just a different bootloader.
Posted by agashka on Sep. 03 2008,00:12oka, i think i got Xtrident to load in DSL, but i cant find that .xserverrc file. Where is it, and how to open it?
edit: i was able to find .xserverrc, edited it, quitted X (CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE)
then putted Sudo X.
Then got into X, but takes forever to load.... (not done as i write this, got an 'x' as cursor and thats it)
Posted by Juanito on Sep. 03 2008,03:40I think you need to start X as a normal user (i.e. don't use "sudo") - if you edited .xserverrc correctly, then "startx" should work.
Posted by curaga on Sep. 03 2008,11:59Just starting X does not start anything else - it's not slow, it's fast and fully loaded at the X pattern.
Like Juanito said, use "startx" to get the full environment.
