Hi all,

I just tried both the CD and embedded DSL version.  So far, DSL rocks!

I got the CD boot version hooked up to the net but am having some trouble with the embedded version.  I presume that others have got it working as an embedded Linux OS, as cool as the concept is, is not too useful without connection to the outside world.

In the embedded version, since I assume that DSL has no direct access to the hardware (i.e., the host OS Win XP does), how are the network calls resolved.  Doesn't DSL's connection need to be bridged to the host machine's network connection?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,
Mike

Go to the qemu web site and read up on user networking.

It explains how the DSL emulator works with your host OS.

Thanks for the reply.  I did try search the qemu site but didn't find anything too useful.  The site tells you to configure the tun0 device which doesn't exist, and requires the TUN/TAP network interface (/dev/net/tun) which isn't present either.

Did you actually get networking working in the embedded version?  If so, how did you accomplish this without the tun0 device?  Has anyone got this working because as I see it, I don't see that it's possible without the tun0 device/driver.

Thanks,
Mike

You do not need a TAP/TUN device to do networking with a MSWindows host running DSL inside a QEMU window.

Here is the section that I was talking about:

I overlooked that section you referred to.

It looks like I need to configure a few things but I'm unsure how to set a few of them.  Specifically, Netcardconfig asks for:
1) Use DHCP broadcast?
2) IP address for eth0?  I used 10.0.2.100
3) Network mask for eth0: 255.255.255.0 (default)
4) Broadcast address for eth0: 10.0.2.255 (default)
5) Default gateway: 10.0.2.2 (default)
6) Nameserver: 10.0.2.3 (default)

Do these look correct?

Have you been able to get this working?  If so, could you explain to me how?  Sorry, I'm not a network guru so I need a lot of help.

Thanks again,
Mike

I use DSL-embedded on a MSWindows (WinXP SP1) computer that is hooked up to a DHCP enabled network.  While using other MSWindows programs like Internet Explorer, I can connect to the Internet just fine.

When I start up DSL embedded, I don't need to do anything extra regarding DHCP or netcardconfig.

DSL automatically configures the virtual NIC and it works fine with no further tweaking from scripts or control panel.

I give up... I've put in way too much time and am tired of fussing with it.  It definitely doesn't work in the default config for me.  I'm going to stick with VMWare and maybe give DSL a try another time.  There's a lot more overhead but at least it works.

Thanks for all your attempts to help.

mikemike,
You don't have ZoneAlarm, or Symantec running? Do you ?
Since windows sees qemu as just another app, they may be getting blocked.

Thanks for your reply, ke4nt.

No, I don't have any firewall apps running as I'm behind a router.  To validate that there is no firewall blocking access, I just reinstalled VMWare hosting Fedora Core 3 and it is able to reach the internet out of the box with no config changes needed.

If any one else has any ideas, I'd love to hear from you.

Cheers,
Mike

Hi,
Sorry to here you having trouble.
I have XP Professional SP2 installed and I use Wireless networking through a router and do not have a problem connecting to the WWW using the default settings, and I use Zone Alarm, maybe I am just plain lucky :D

Thanks for the reply, A.

My system environment is exactly the same..  Win XP SP2, wireless networking behind a router, and I'm using Zone Alarm.  I guess it wasn't meant to be for me.

I'll check back with the next release of DSL.  In the mean time, Fedora Core 3 on VMWare Beta 5 is working out very nicely for me.

Cheers,
Mike

vmware does weird bridging things to windows XP and installed a couple programs that run in the background. do you think those could be causing some interference?

Are you able to 'ssh' or 'telnet' to other hosts ? or can you check other hosts by using 'nslookup' ?
I have no problem to connect to Internet through browser but was not successful for the commands above :-(

Thanks

I have no other hosts to "telnet" or "ssh" to at the moment.

However, I can run nslookup.

The busybox version that is included in DSL is very brief and limited, so I apt-get install dnsutils

typing nslookup reveals:

Server:      10.0.2.3
Address:     10.0.2.3#53

and I can use it to look up other hosts on the greater Internet.

Thanks for all your replies but I've uninstalled DSL for the time being.  I will revisit this at a later time.  It looks like the default network settings should work fine.  I did have VMWare installed at the time so that might have been conflicting with the ethernet bridge as mentioned by one of the posters.

Thanks for all your help,
Mike
