VMWare free VM (sort of)Forum: DSL Embedded Topic: VMWare free VM (sort of) started by: pcause Posted by pcause on Oct. 22 2005,00:39
VMware just announced a free VM "player". It can run a VM created using their regular app. Does anyone have the ability to create the necessary config for the player so that we can have a DSL image?
Posted by MethodOne on Oct. 23 2005,18:06
That would be good because I couldn't get DSL to work in Virtual PC 2004. Just to remind you, VMware Player is 28MB. There's also the trial version of the regular program.

i will work on it and update this thread in the next couple of days. i am wondering if sombody can offer me space to put up this VM.
Posted by pmehta on Nov. 01 2005,22:41
i have a VM ready to work with the new vmplayer and i have tested it enough to ensure that it runs fine. i have also insalled a couple of mydsl packages to ensure that they remain after a shutdown and it does.so all i need is a place to dump a compressed tar ball for people to download. if somebody is willing to dontate space and bandwidth message me or i will try a find a place to host it and update this thread with the download link Posted by Your Fuzzy God on Nov. 01 2005,23:17
You can email me the file (See PM for email) and I will upload it to our server. (Assuming that my email will accept it). If the email doesn't work, I can create a temp. ftp so that you can upload it.Let me know, Posted by pmehta on Nov. 02 2005,01:34
Thanks to Fuzzy God for providing the upload space. VM details are as follows: VM was created using VMware Workstation 5.0 release available for download from VMware's website. Configured with : - DSL 1.5.0 with multi-login - 128MB RAM - 250 MB HDD (Growable VMDK) <currently of size 125MB> - Brdige Networking - Buslogic SCSI Controller (Virtual) Zip File Contains the .vmx file, the vmdk file and the nvram file. 2 default users root dsl password for both users is password any problems let me know. You can make your own if you like !see : < http://www.hackaday.com/entry/1234000153064739/ > for all the right clues. I did something like this : make a disk file using qemu-img e.g "E:\qemu>qemu-img create -f vmdk dsl.vmdk 512M" alter the .vmx to boot off the DSL iso, and load your new dsl.vmdk When booted, note you have a virtual hd on hda. partition it using fdisk from within DSL, (I just made the one, hda1) then right click the desktop and choose the install to hard disk option. follow instructions whilst noting that you can only destroy your virtual disk file, just make another if it doesn't work out. reboot the VM. It boots ! it works! much much faster than QEMU, networking and sound etc just seem to work straight out of box for me on win2k. Apologies for my vagueness, I'm afraid I was rather drunk when I did this, and am now hung over, but that only goes to show how easy it is even for an idiot like myself. Posted by MethodOne on Nov. 04 2005,17:44
Here's my experience with the DSL VM:1. The sound doesn't work, even after loading alsadebs.dsl. 2. You have to click on Ethernet and select NAT. After that configure the networking inside DSL On my host computer, I have Realtek ALC350 AC97 sound. Posted by mayakovski on Nov. 05 2005,23:25
Works perfectly. No errors, no glitches and on the net wothout a single bit of config. You Rock Pmehta. Posted by Afri on Dec. 13 2005,18:00

hallo, does this dsl embedded with this vmware vm make it possible to copy it to usb-stick (i have 256mb and one with 1gb) and run it from usb stick - with firefox, win97 and foxit?i am looking for a way to separate my work on my .doc thesis files and be able to run firefox, winword97 and foxit or adobe reader with my settings from usb - stick, so i could use it where ever i found a working pc. is this a possible way? and if, please can you post a realy realy simple explanation how - i browsed this forum extensively, but its realy for tech professionals knowing coding etc thanks for answers Michaela Posted by min on Dec. 21 2005,22:24
Went ahead and tried this out. Works perfectly. Had problems with the mouse but only because I thought I had an USB mouse. Excellent! Fun to play with when work is slow! Posted by HaKkErS on Dec. 25 2005,14:15
i downloaded this and i try to run it but it asks me for box login password wats do i type in for this it also wont let me type in the password feiled Posted by Linus on Dec. 25 2005,19:08
Searching this Forum tells us the username "DSL" [Enterr] and password: (will not echo to screen as you type) "password" {Enter] . Neither one in quotes, of course.

The DSL Virtual Machine runs beautifully. Good work. This is my first experience with DSL and I like it. It's lean and quick but with all the essentials.JavaMan "I compile therefore I am." Posted by mrE on Dec. 30 2005,17:14
Hi,From an earlier post I thought I would experiment... If you have more hhd space then another option is to use a larger Linux Live CD iso instead of the iso image of DSL. I have found that I got Knoppix 4.0.2 working on my VM Ware PC. This gives a much richer FULL GUI experience than DSL. As it is so good I am going to try SLAX the Kill Bill edition now... mrE Posted by wing on Jan. 03 2006,01:23
PPPoE not working....I'm not sure if it is DSL or if it is my vmware but when I click on the PPPoE it says it can't find a connection, it doesn't even ask me for details.... Posted by pr0f3550r on Jan. 04 2006,10:35
My 2 cents about the VWplayer + the dsl image:I tried that on: Win Xp, 128 RAM, 800 MHZ. It took about 35 mins to install the vwplayer, it runs more or less as fast as dsl + the kqemu accelerator (that's good stuff indeeed), it is not portable, that is it does not make sense to install it onto a memory stick as it makes a lot of changes onto the registry. Conclusion: I'll stick with dsl+ qemu + kqemu. By the way: on the above machine kqemu gave me at least 2-3 times acceleration Posted by asif_ssskhan@yahoo.com on Jan. 06 2006,07:25

Any chance of a 2.1b version of the VMWare DSL?
Posted by pigtail on Jan. 12 2006,14:24
You should find it here:< dsl 2.1 vmx > Posted by Guest on Jan. 19 2006,07:15
Sorry, the link above contains only an iso instance of dsl for vmware

ftp://ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distributions/damnsmall/current/dsl-2.1b-vmx.zip Geez...its not hard to find it bud Brian AwPhuch Posted by stoneguy on Jan. 21 2006,16:40
Not hard to find, but not working either! For openers, wrong iso name is referenced in vmx. But even after fixing that, still won't boot. I'll look at the vmx that comes with the Ubuntu-based browser appliance (which is considerably more complex) and see if I can make any sense out of it. Posted by stoneguy on Jan. 21 2006,21:43
No luck. Tried adapting the vmx and helper files that shipped with the browser applicance VMWare offers, but it doesn't work. Fails during the PXEboot emualtion. Someone with a full copy of VMWare Workstation is going to have to generate the package for 2.1b 2.1vmx works fine. Posted by PhilTheAlien on Jan. 22 2006,22:38
It works here, thanks very much to the compiler! There is a typo in the VMX you need to edit- ide1:0.filename = "dsl-2.1.isob" should be ide1:0.filename = "dsl-2.1b.iso" Posted by Poju on Jan. 26 2006,07:30
And after fixing typo you need to clean files VMX created in first boot try.

OK, so how would one go about using VMware Player and this vm on a thumb drive? Does the Player have to be specific to the o/s one wants to run the vm on?What size thumb drive would be required to run both the Player ane this vm? Thanks Posted by 300c_pilot on Feb. 10 2006,06:43
VMware has released there VMware server which is free for now, with it you can install DSL from a cd or just the current iso in about 10 minutes. The windows version requires a server version, linux version does not care. Posted by Gavin on Feb. 27 2006,14:21
"2 default usersroot dsl password for both users is password " Hi, downloaded the windows zio no problem, Installed it and it runs fine with VMWare Player except... I can't get it to login with either user. What have I done wrong? Thanks Gavin Posted by Onondaga on Mar. 08 2006,02:54
The DSL VM is great. How does the growable disk work? I'd like to increase the size, but I'm not sure where to start. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Its great for tweaking DSL with impunity. Thanks for supporting this.FYI - latest version can be found at < ftp://ibiblio.org/pub....vmx.zip > enjoy Posted by loserbaby on Mar. 20 2006,00:03
Ok, I'm pretty new to all this. Typically use suse, but checked out DSL as well as many other various distros... I really like DSL, I bought a 512mb pen drive, and am experimenting which install I prefer. I'm having some trouble getting embedded going. I have downloaded and installed VMware to my laptop... about as far as I got. My main question is, if I need to install VMware, which is larger than DSL itself, what is the point? I guess not having to reboot? Was I wrong in believing that I could run DSL from my pendrive, as imbedded on any compatable computer without installing software to the host?
Posted by roberts on Mar. 20 2006,00:38
dsl-embedded.zip, i.e., using Qemu, does not require any software to be installed on the host. It can be boot from winthin Windows from within another Linux host, from a boot floppy, from a cdrom and , if the host computer supports booting from USB. natively from the usb pendrive. Vmplayer requires software to be installed on the host.
Posted by loserbaby on Mar. 20 2006,17:22
Cool, I will try Qemu as well, Linux is interesting, but a bit tricky to learn from scratch. I'll keep reading...

Hi, i am installing VMware Player and want to try VMware version of DSL on it. Problem is that none of download link for VMware version of DSL is working. Can anybody give me a working link. Also I want to ask, in order to install VMware version of DSL, VMware Player is enough or I need to download VMware Workstation/ Server.( I think out of these only VMware player is free). Thanks for the help. Posted by 300c_pilot on April 14 2006,04:01
Player works fine. VMware server is free also. Its good if you want dsl to start automatically when your computer is booted up.Smooth flights... Posted by aigle on April 14 2006,22:05

hi the link is dead! can someone upload it again please thanx Posted by dhodnett on July 05 2006,20:48
FYI: the ibiblio downloads are located at:< ftp://ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distributions/damnsmall/current/ > for the current vmware download look for dsl-3.0.1-vmx.zip Posted by linux_gal on July 09 2006,01:01
(having a bit o trouble with staying registered)I used the VMWARE player provided by Linux Format Magazine. I just unzipped the dsl version into a DSL directory, clicked on xxxxxx.VM? and it worked fine using SuSE 9.1... I've been trying to get it to fly with Windows, but I need to know all the DLL files required for the VMware player. Posted by bravo-uniform-golf on Jan. 18 2007,22:33
