DSL Gaming Forum

Welcome!  You have reached nirvana....

Here are some facts to start..

1. Yes, DSL CAN have accelerated NVidia graphics.
2. Yes, most all games ported to Linux WILL run in DSL.
3. Yes, many winblows games will run in DSL with wine.
4. No, DSL cannot distribute game warez or keygens or scripts.
 ( if it's not open-source , you won't find it here )

Got a game extension you want to submit to DSL ?
Send it to extensions [at] damnsmalllinux [dot] org

Here is my base system for these initial postings..
--------------------------------------------------------------
Abit VP6 Dual 1000MHz P3-Intel o'c to 1077MHz
GeForce 4 - 4400  64MB  video card.
160GB Maxtor HD - Dual 20GB Western Digital HD's
Toshiba 16X Dual Layer DVD+/-R Drive
Plextor Plexwriter 12/10/32A
1.5GB Micron PC133 RAM ( running at 143 )
Ensoniq 128 Soundcard
Intel 100 NIC
Rhycom 450W PS
--------------------------------------------------------------
No powerhouse here, but a fine system for running games in DSL.
Several other boxes here as well, this one's MINE !!  :)

In the future, I want to put up some ballpark performance data
using some older hardware with the stock DSL and several titles.

Don't be surprised if things get moved around a little this first few days.
Housekeeping.

Hey ke4nt, could you give us a rundown of how you have your system set up, how you boot, how you set up wine etc.?

You've said elsewhere that you boot from livecd and access the games on other partitions etc. - any particular "process" you go through when you boot, ie. pointers on how someone can make a similar setup to yours quickly and easily?  A step-by-step would be greatly appreciated, eg
["
  1.  boot livecd
  2.  mount hard drive partition and create folder called "dslgames"
  3.  install xfree86 and nvidia .dsl's, change such-and-such to something-or-other, exit x and...
  4.  Install UT2004demo by downloading from..., then in a terminal typing "ut2* /mnt/hda7/dslgames..."
  4.  edit filetool.lst to include blah & blah, run backup to hda7...
  5.  on next boot, use "dsl restore hda7..."
"]

Would be a great resource, kind of a "how to for dsl gamers".  I'd like to be able to get xfree86 and nvidia working easily after booting from a livecd, but I keep getting lost somewhere  along the way...

I agree, a basic "HOWTO" would be awesome!

Are the games you have up "ports" to Linux, you just purchase the package and run?

Where do you find them?

What's gonna happen when the first three pages of this forum are filled with stickies.....it'll be hard to find new threads =o)
Posted by AwPhuch on Jan. 17 2005,19:39
You only sticky the imporant stuff..the individual games can be normal threads

This is just for the first introductory week in the gaming forum.

Soon, I'll have only 1 or 2 that stick..

EDIT
( for now, I've only "stuck" the ones we have in the repository )
/EDIT

Just getting organized with all the contributions.
It was helping me keep track of the new threads.

Perhaps I've bitten off too large a chunk o' goo here..
but we'll see how it goes..

Keep feeding me your thoughts, the feedback helps everyone.
I'll do what I can..

Noooo, youre doing a good thing, the only real things holding me back from using damnsmall linux full time,  was the difficulty of playing games and setting up printers, so youve got one out of the two.

I do have a recomendation for some games only 2 tho,
EgoBoo < http://egoboo.sourceforge.net/ > which is a cutesy dungeon crawler
and Eternal Lands, which is an free mmorpg, but I don't know if its open source.
It has a linux version which I've played, now, I have got it running, but I have never got past the login screen (maybe because my ISP is banned?) but It is possible to run it even with xfree86 apt-getted.

good job, ke4nt

Did u find the post in the forums about setting up q2 on DSL ?

Basically, grab a pak0.pak file from your favorite copy of Q2,
or pull it out of the shareware package..

Place it into the base dir, and run the game..

Quake2 has no sound. The error message is:

------- sound initialization -------
/dev/dsp: Input/output error
SNDDMA_Init: Could not mmap /dev/dsp.

Tried changing /dev/dsp to dsp0 - dsp4, snd in config.cfg but no change... The sound is OK in other applications, I'm using alsadebs.dsl.

Q2 is still great but it needs sound, please help.

So where do I find the forums about setting up q2 if not in the games section?

And where is this base dir found. I found where the program was located but I was assuming that there was a folder elsewhere to place the pak0.pak.

Clarify please?  ???

sankarv-

The MyDSL applications have an item named e-board which is a GUI chess game with a "engine" called "Crafty" which actually allows you to play against it without having to download anything else. They say Crafty is not too expert but it beats me everytime.

Good Luck

Hey!!!
I'm trying to download the game:"Rocks'n'Diamonds" on DSL.
Whenever I run it,it starts loading the graphics, then  it goes to the main menu and when I click anything, the game quits its self and I get a message saying:

rocksndiamonds sound server: cannot set fragment size of audio device -- no sounds
rocksndiamonds sound server: aborting
----end-of-output----

Does anyone know what to do????And while I'm at it if you know how to save
in rocks'n'diamonds,PLEASE tell me.
:D

...just checked it out; took me a few days of brushing up, but finally got Crafty to resign.  Here's a great resource:    < http://www.chessebook.com >
