wish listForum: DSL Ideas and Suggestions Topic: wish list started by: ubl Posted by ubl on Dec. 07 2005,22:00
I think that DSL is nearly there. I got into computers so that I could record my own music. I started with a 486 ms windows 3.1 and moved up to win95 then 98, when KNOPPIX 3.3 came out. It amazed me that such a small distro could be so user friendly, but the single click on the icons scared me. I moved up to winme and then to winxp and always found the system had something wrong with it that I couldn't fix. During this time, I experimented with different Linux distro's, but always found that they quickly became complicated, and I had to type something in.I had always heard about 'bloat ware', I often wondered about why programs had to be so big. Then I discovered DSL, I think it was the 1.3 version. The first thing I noticed was that it was fast, real fast. The next thing I noticed was that I had to double click the icons, I had a chance to think before executing something. The more I used DSL the more I was blown away by what it could do! *****MY DSL WISH LIST***** everything should be point and click, for new users and there must be an easy way to uninstall programs rather than reboot. It may also maybe good to have the default at startup as double click, as to not scare off window users. I like the analagy of the three elephants, Two big ones and a little one. Could the elephants be representing operating systems? Is the little one DSL? Forever small, forever beautiful. thank, ubl Posted by Cybonix on Dec. 08 2005,13:15
Many might read this and think you're being a little sentimental, but you have a point. Linux is not trying to be like Windows. Linux is trying to show the world that there is a difference. If Linux is to grow like Windows, it needs to show the world that it’s “easy” to use… yet… Different. Thanks for you post. I dare others to reply Posted by dangeosan on Dec. 15 2005,04:43

Over the weekend I've given my 3 sisters and 2 cousins LIVE-CD ( 5 total) that I made (with GAIM of course ! ). I've gave them a brief tutorial and the fact that they could leave their PC on for days or weeks connected to the internet and no need to be afraid of viruses because of the default read-only ( aka DSL TORAM). Majority of them just want to surf the internet and not save anything.. so DSL is the perfect solution for them I've also gave them tutorial on how to save to usb thumbdrives. My wishlist.. 1) to be able to set our own desktop preference (aka Wallpaper) thru remastered LIVE-CD ( most of the time I just want to "DSL TORAM" but I want my favorite wallpaper to come up "tuxVxp". Currently i would have to do the "backup/restore" to achieve this) 2) to be able to activate usb devices (plug-and-play) when you've already booted up but forgot to DSL dsl=sda1 while booting up. Dear all,My wish list toward DSL progress is to have my computer compatible to the external modem, more specifically - the win modem. Of course, with the auto detection function, once we start up DSL on our computer. I am sure that 'most of DSL users and those who are interested in DSL' in many countries have problem to possess the 'real' modem. Thank you for reading and wish it comes true. Is there a floppy image that could install DSL toram from the net?

You can do it with the Tom's root boot floppy disk and the frugal_lite script that is downloadable from the DSL web site download page.

That's small. I wonder if frugal_lite could be added to Tom's root boot floppy? Or would there be any point?

It would be handy to have a bootable floppy that would (automatically?) connect a pc with the internet, download and install DSL, to your preference (frugal or toram). Could this all fit on a 1.44mb floppy? It could be like a DSL seed... Posted by backslash on Dec. 29 2005,16:58
Wow, it would be almost impossible to make it generic enough. eg. some computers connect via 56k, DSL modem, cable, some connect through a LAN... I really like the idea but it seems almost infeasible to me. I'm interested to see what other people think about this. Posted by cbagger01 on Dec. 29 2005,20:56
The other problem is that you would need KNOPPIX style hardware autodetection.Tom's floppy contains many network card drivers and utilities but they are semi-manual tasks to get them working in many situations. Especially with ISA network cards. But with a little playing around, it should be possible to figure out how to: 1) Make a tom's root/boot floppy disk 2) Boot it and use it to connect to the Internet 3) Use ftp or http to download the script from distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/damnsmall/current/frugal_lite.sh It's only 2k in size, so you could probably save it directly to the floppy somehow. Worst case, you might have to delete some unneeded driver files etc in order to free up some room. 4) Make the script executable, eg chmod 755 frugal_lite.sh 5) Run the script, eg ./frugal_lite.sh I have never done it personally, but it looks pretty straightforward to someone who is not afraid to play around a little bit and learn some new things. frugal_lite.sh would install the full version of DSL?

frugal_lite.sh would install the full version of DSL?[b]Sorry about the double post, the first time I tried to reply I was sent to an error page on this server saying something about not being able to find the page... Posted by cbagger01 on Dec. 29 2005,21:18

I would like to see flash work in DSL. I did not see a package for it & I'm not even sure if there is a Linux version.

The oficial Linux Flash plugin from Adobe/Macromedia is here < http://www.macromedia.com/shockwa....veFlash >A GPL version of Flash that doesn't support much but earlier versions (v 3 or 4 I think) is here: http://gplflash.sourceforge.net/ with GPLFlash 1 debs here < http://packages.debian.org/unstable/web/libflash-mozplugin > A Alpha Quality Gnu Flash Plugin called Gnash is here < http://www.gnu.org/software/gnash/ > although only the standalone works rights now but it does work with Flash 7 swf. Forgot something....The easiest way to get and install the Offical Flash Plugin in Mozilla Firefox (Assuming you have installed DSL) is to go to a website that doesn't use Javascript to check the plugins then click on the broken plugin. The Mozilla plugin finder will then display the EULA- Click I agree if you agree to the terms, or no if you don't but it won't install, then Mozilla Firefox will automagically install the pl;ayer for you. < http://www.tulrich.com/geekstuff/gameswf.html > has a non-check plugin for you and also has a free (GPL) verion of Flash if you don't agree to MM EULA.
