downloadable extensions CD?Forum: DSL Ideas and Suggestions Topic: downloadable extensions CD? started by: vees Posted by vees on Dec. 22 2005,19:43
Hi,First, I have to say that DSL is truly awesome, by far the best mini-CD distro I have ever seen. One of its most useful and well-designed feature is the DSL extensions. In my case there is only a small problem: I can only afford dial-up. So getting as many extensions as I want is not easy. Could I suggest that you make a CD of extensions which users such as myself could order? All that would be needed then is to point the extensions application to the CD as a extension repository and install the extensions locally. Also - admins asked to fix computers which are not connected to the internet, or have connection problems, would benefit from having such a CD with DSL extensions. Does that make sense? I used to offer both bootable CD's and DVD's loaded with extensionsfor a donation to DSL. ( with DSL's blessing ) Due to low demand, I discontinued my website offering those. But I still have several copies of each on-hand ( 1.5 version ) If interested, send me an email at ke4nt (at) yahoo , or PM me. I'll give you an address to send a self-addressed/self-stamped envelope. ( sri, postage ate me up last time.. ) ...and consider making a token donation to DSL for the freebie... 73 ke4nt Posted by vees on Dec. 22 2005,22:58
Great idea! But would these extensions still work with DSL 2.0? Do all the extensions fit on a CD or does the DVD have more stuff? Thanks, VS Posted by mikshaw on Dec. 23 2005,02:45
At this point it's possible that not all extensions will fit on a single CD, though i don't know for sure....my guess is the total filesize of all available extensions is now more than 700mb.Most but not all extensions will work with DSL2.0. Anything that is built for a specific kernel (such as nvidia video driver) will need a version of DSL with that kernel. Posted by vees on Dec. 23 2005,15:21
