You might consider adding a section for compiling certain things for a price. I am trying to get ma521 wifi card to work with dsl without success my kernal version is 2.4.26 my gcc version is 2.95.4. I have found one person that is trying to talk me through it, but none of the commands he is giving me works with dsl. I cannot get knoppix to work on my comps. I have listed it as a project on guru but have got no responces. I do not mind paying someone to compile this driver. And it dawned on me the perfect solution would be to see if I can get the dsl team to do then pay either through a donation or directly. Since you have the store for generating money this is a good next step. Another simple answer would be to have a list of which kernal and gcc version is in each archived dsl distro's so I can download the right distro to fit a compiled driver.

I back your idea.
Anybody can provide paid support for FOSS software, but if the DSL supremos did that themselves that'd be damn big money...

Posted by roberts on Mar. 03 2006,15:26
OK. Let me think about this.
All the stuff I have put into DSL has been for free.
I have even communicated with individuals to build modules for them for free.
But now, money should be involved? Now, after I have missed out on all this 'damn big money'  ???
Can you imagine if this project was a pay-as-you-go. I could be retired! :;):  Wait, I already am. Doesn't matter.
Thanks alot. Very motivating for those who contribute for free.
Should I post a menu of the next round of improvements with prices and see if any of them get paid for? Or is it that just some of us are expected to do this for free?
Please let me know how I should proceed with my services.

How about a DSL Bounties page?  People offer a certain amount for a task to be completed, and if others want the same thing they can add to the bounty =o)

ok...just so you know, I'm not completely serious.
But it still might be an interesting way to raise funds for the DSL project. Someone who really wants a particular extension can offer to donate a dollar or two to DSL.  If someone else feels they want the same thing, they can tack on another buck or two.   If the project is completed, and works, those who offered the bounty on that project would send their pledged amounts to DSL.

Let me clarify: I don't want DSL to become a pay-as-you-go distro.I was thinking of something like building cutom distros for businesses and stuff like that.
Of course software must remain free, in all senses....

Posted by dvdljns on Mar. 03 2006,22:16
no! Thats not the idea. I need rtl8180 working on my comp. I cannot get the files to compile. None of the the compiled files I downloaded will run on kernal. I had to post it as a project on guru pay someone 75 bucks to get it compiled. The one thing I did state is it had to be submitted to the dsl website. And who knows if the guy can really compile it right. If I have to do this till I learn how to do it myself? why not you. I am not sugesting you make people pay for stuff added to dsl, but lets face it sending me to a set of links that does not help me understand my problam which is what happened on the forums does not get my problam solved. I am reading and will learn, I also will buy the dsl book listed on your website. But need dsl to use my rtl8180L now. So that means a programer that does not use dsl is making money because I want to use the distro. Why should you get insulted because I would prefer to keep the money I am already spending going to the place that will help dsl and me the most. If my wireless card is not working by monday I have no choice but to reload windows. I have used windows since 0.97 I have every version windows since that one. But I really want to get away from windows but linux users make it so hard to learn linux I just do not understand linux users. They want you to replace win with linux but expect you to start out understanding how to everything on it. Or send you to help files and howto's aimed at programmers. But you are right dsl is your system you can except my money or force me to give it to someone else but it ISyour choice. I am sorry if I upset you or seemed rude.I just feel I am beating my head against the wall here and thought you could help.
Posted by dvdljns on Mar. 03 2006,22:34
My Idea was if someone needed something they could not find and did not know enough to build it themselves they could list it with the dsl website someone could build it and upload it and the money could go to the website as a donation or to the builder or whatever. I just know that I to spend my lunch money for the next two weeks on resolving a prob with dsl and do not even know if it will resolve it.

You know John and I are both the developers of DSL.
We are easily reached at john at damnsmalllinux.org or
robert at damnsmalllinnux.org
Yet, many times John and I hear of someone paying someone else to do something for their DSL copy and that they are not happy with the results. Then they expect John or I to do it for the project, i.e., free.  This has just recently happened. Mostly we never hear about requests or even given first right of refusal. I guess it is just the way it is. I guess my point being, that the developers should be given first consderation, first right of refusal. Then there are others who think they can take our work and make money selling it. I guess money like power corrupts. But to suggest to make a portition of this website for others to make money while the donations to damnsmalllinux are so small seems not right by me.

I agree and now that I know that you can be reached and will respond I will do that in the future. Maybe you should add that info as a sticky. Regardless of how plain or obvois you think it should be it is not. Thanks for the info.

OK Im Also Serious!
I Would Pay The DSL Team If They Would Make Me A Customized DSL Version..! (not for the software.. but for the work ^^)
I Would Pay 25$ + Shipping On CD To Germany(should be 5-7$ or so)...

What I Need Would Be:
A Bootable CD With Install To USB Stick Support.
The Same GUI Like The Old One.. (but not the fluxbox the other one..).
The pppoe And The Networkcard Config Tool (wlan would be also good).
A GUI Based Partitionating Tool.
A Webbrowser (firefox?).
Automatic HW Detection On Boot.
An Easy GUI Based File Manager (plz not emelfm maybe krusader?).
An IRC Client (xsicr?).
Something To Browse Windows Shares In The Network.
A Samba Server To Share Folders To Be Browsable From A Windows PC.
Xmms For Sound ^^.
VLC For Video (dont forget the codecs^^).
Openoffice (Word,Calculation only.. no need for the others)
An wysiwyg HTML Editor.
A Easy FTP Program.
A Normal Text Editor (kate or kwrite).
My Hostname Should Be: Kimiko
My Workgroup Should Be: Arbeitsgruppe
A Burnig Program Would Be Good (k3b?)
Oh And A Graphic Editor Is Needed! (bmp, gif, jpg, png with converting function).
A Antivirus Program To Clean Windumb Systems ^^.
A GUI Based Zip Program for zip, rar, tar, gzip.
A PDF Viewer.
A Instant Messaging Prog Like Kopete Would Be Good.
A GUI Based Bittorrent Client.
And Something For Printing.
And Last But Not Least: My Username Should Be: AmyS3

That Would Be All All...  Should Not Be Bigger Than 250Mb ^^

If 25$ For The Work is Too Less Just Say It...
Just Mail Me If U Take The Job...
Mail: dsl@software-styling.de

With Kind Regards: AmyS3
PS: Im Realy Serious About It!!!
If It Would Fit Attach Something Like Delphi To The Distro (Or Any Other GUI Based c++ Programming Tool).

Posted by AmyS3 on Mar. 05 2006,22:24
Im Realy Seriuos!!
The Point Of Asking U Guys To Do It, Is Just That Im To Stupid To Make A Own Distro. Im A Linux Noob Which Only Worked With Windows Systems Till Now...

Sounds to me like all you need to do is pay them to change three or four things in dsl and you have it.I don't know how it works when you have to or three manigers but I changed to jwm. I do not know if that runs off flux box or not. I also think you have to set up workgroup name and stuff after you load the os. Sounds like you need to do what I am doing. get it to work then buy the dsl book so you can learn how install and uninstall programs, then you can put together. One thing even someone as slow as me knows You still have to learn the same things whether you start with a costum made distro are mod one like this. And the ideal of being able to build drop in modules for my systems is pretty exciting.  But after many years of windows I need more help then some people do. And I need things explained in reeeal simple terms.
Posted by dvdljns on Mar. 06 2006,05:09
download dsl and buy the book and keep posting questions to linux forums. You are still going to have to learn the same things. use jwm as a windows manager. I like it better than fluxbox. I just need more help than most. But it still won't work unless you know how to make it you work. If you look at dsl most of what you want is there you just need to learn how to tweak it and install/uninstall stuff.
Posted by AmyS3 on Mar. 06 2006,07:54
But The Problem Is That I Want It Fast, And If I Would Learn To Do It I Would Need Years!
I Have Realy No Idea How To Do It.. Im A Realy NEW Linux errr.. User/Tester?!?!?
Simply Called NOOOOOB...
All I Want To Have Is A Base System With The Progs I Mentioned, And Then I Could Try To Learn How To Make A Own Distro.. But First I Want To Have A Complete Working System With All What I Need..
I Wouldn Mind It If I Have To Boot From USB Every Time I Want To Use My PC...
All My Personal Files Are Saved On A Extra Harddrive..
OS=USB and Data=HDD ^^

To Be True I Dont Realy Want To Learn How To Make Own Linux Distros ^^ Maybe When I Have A Ready System Like I Want To Have, And Try To Rebuild It When I Have Time An The Intention To Do So...
I Always Used Windows Before.. I Grew Up With Windows, And Had All Windows Versions.. I  Also Worked For Dell And Made Windows Support, So I Can Say Im A Pretty Skilled Windows User/Professionel..
But When It Comes To Linux Im As Stupid As A Newborn Baby ^^

I Also Dont Want To Discuss This Topic..
I Just Want To Know If The DSL Team Would Make It For Me If I Pay Them For There Work .. If They Make It For Free Would Be Also OK ^^
I Wouldnd Mind If Anyone Else Than The DSL Team Would Do It, I Would Pay Them Also... It Just Have To Be Like I Wrote Before...
Just Mail Me... If Someone Took The Job I Make A New Post That The Job Is Already Taken..

Hmm... Seems to me that a C++ programmer should have zero trouble remastering their own CD... Anyway $25.00 is somewhat low for a software change like that, however it's not that hard to remaster what you want... Check out this thread...

Which is the mkmydsl thread under DSL tips and tricks started by user Green.

So, if I download the DSL you want (pay my ISP), install to a partition, set it up to your specifications, download all other software, compile, buy the shipping material, ship, worry about any customs that may arise, worry about getting paid in the end, 250 M for $25 = $0.10/M divided by a couple days work should be a few cents per hour.

And I can beat the DSL team at their own game.  Sounds like fun.  I know John and Robert don't put much effort into this distro so they won't mind.

People who are really serious would support DSL, find a way to contact them. I have had no problems getting answers, advice, etc... from these forums.  Why do other people come back and say they had to use someone else and then say they are serious now?

I could probably build the distro that you want but to find the items you want would require some time.  You gave a list that is ambiguous.  Provide specific software titles that work with DSL (and you have tested yourself) and anyone can remaster you a distro.  And you still have to provide drivers for your hardware and if they don't work when you get the CD who's fault is it?  Do I remaster for free?

Getting a driver that works with a distro is alot different than getting a distro to your specs.

Posted by dvdljns on Mar. 12 2006,04:32
robert yahoo mail cannot reach you for some reason. Do not know why. Don't know what happened to that guy that was supposed to build me a driver that worked with this version of dsl but he has dissapeared too. since you have the tools and knowledge will you build a driver for my dsl and send me a copy and post a copy on your website then I can just donate the 75 bucks to you. that will get me on the web and it will be all about learning, learning and learning. Or build a module that adds the stuff I need to compile things on dsl. I think I have read enough to compile it if I could get the  make to work.
Posted by Onikage on Mar. 12 2006,05:44
AmyS - About the driver-build by 'great guru's' here, forget.

No 'guru' here wishes to rise above mediocrity and do as professionals would.

Guru's would rather insult than help, deny than assist, refuse money rather than make money by helping.

Cripple the users here through proprietary lock-down, in doing, they succeed!

In the beginning software was free, people gave it freely because they were proud of there work and wanted others to enjoy it. Then a man named Gates came along and desided this was wrong and he could make money from the people that wanted a shortcut and did not want to learn how to program themselves. You know how that story ends...Lets not let DSL go this way.

The developers probably have day jobs, if you want something done learn to do it yourself, they had too. The reward is far greater if you have learned along the way. There are lots of people here that will try to help you out when you need it.

Enough on the tears, here is a cold hard fact. In my company developers make over $65.00 an hour and I do not allow them to take a project that is less then $35,000.00 in scope. So if you offer, Please realize what time & knowledge is worth.

Smooth Flights... :)

Posted by dvdljns on Mar. 13 2006,16:21
Are you actually saying you think only programers should have linux. That atatude is exactly the reason windows is on most machines. Bill gates was right most people do have jobs I have to of them actaully If I have to waite till I learn a programing language to use linux I might as well stick to windows. It works straight out of the box. I am glad you are doing so well with your bussiness but if at the end of the day your programers have to check with you to take on a personal project. I am sorry they had to sell their soul to get the job. Since I think your attitude is the most prevalant attitude out there gates has nothing to worry about. His OS will stay the main os on most computors while linux will stay the niche system.
Posted by 300c_pilot on Mar. 13 2006,17:02
I was saying (thinking any way) that you should look forward to learning as you go, see it as a challenge. But if you need something now, please understand the time & effort that is needed. After I posted, I had a thought that it would be taken wrong and I am sorry.

For the record what my employees do on there own time is none of my business, I was refering only to in house projects. And we are not doing well at all, today is layoff day.

Smooth flights...

I just do not want anyone to think compiling my driver compares to a 35000 dollar job. I am willing to learn but dsl isn't evan giving me a chance to do that. If I cannot get online to acces files what am I going to learn. As for as I can tell I do not evan have what I need to compile files in dsl.I cannot find a 2.4.26 kernal to try to add to this distro. Since you have to compile so much on linux I cannot evan guess why they would leave out that option.
Posted by cbagger01 on Mar. 14 2006,06:47
compiler and associated programs = big
dsl = small

It is not possible to fit the compiler and maintain the 50MB size limit.

Posted by dvdljns on Mar. 14 2006,14:39
can you fit it in 500 mb.
Posted by 300c_pilot on Mar. 14 2006,22:29
PM me with your address and I will send you everything I can download or find regarding dsl on cd or dvd for free. Including a VMware version that you can run on VMware player. Anyone else that wants a cd can donate 5.00 to dsl and I will send them one. The Max I will make is 20.

Lets get back to having fun.

Posted by 300c_pilot on Mar. 17 2006,05:22
I rsync'd the ftp site so if it is there then its on the dvd's, there is over 7 gigs out there, that I have downloaded so far. So two dvds at this point. Also if someone wants them from outside the US they will need to pay shipping.:(

Ok, I'm diving into this..... stuff in my own way.

Here's my offer to anyone who thinks this angle is cute enough.
(Subject to the developers approval of course)

I'll donate $40 to the DSL project in the name of whoever makes an Xfoil option appear in the MyDSL.

Rules:
I have to see it work here on my own couch computer after booting DSL and clicking through the MyDSL icon....

The readme stated that it should build without much trouble on a system with fortran-77, C, and X dev tools, all of which I have.  However, when i tried to build the binaries i was told that I was missing "blas".  After a short google i assume this is the Basic Linear Algebra Subprograms, but i haven't done anything to install it yet.
Posted by clacker on April 06 2006,14:56
I was able to get xfoil to compile.  You can get the blas using apt-get install blas and after modifying the makefile a little (gcc3 -> gcc and adjusting for include locations) it compiled fine.

I made an xfoil.dsl from it and if mikshaw doesn't mind, I'll submit it.

waitaminute.

I'm not sure exaclty I get  where Robert's view of this goes, but I feel maybe it's a bit like ticket touting.
You create a sports or concert venue and officially sell tickets only later see them exchanging in the 'market' for 10 to 50 times their value, only in this case the initial value is zero. The punters have their own reasoning  -it's the only way I can get a seat, I'll pay anything- which is sound reasoning since most of the tickets are held by the 'elite' and hey, it fills the seats. But the organisers can't help but feel short changed.
This seems okay as long as the money gets back to the developers. But how do we know this for sure? How do we know it doesn't get to the point that no tickets will see the day of light unless 'donation' requests are made? Shouldn't the donations be first sent and put on some official request list? After all they are 'donations' aren't they, not 'orders' ?

Posted by dvdljns on April 06 2006,17:51
I think that is the thing this is a donation. not an order. sort of like pledging an donation. Sometimes the pledges will not get there But lets not sew distrust without reason. I thought I saw a list of people who donated but if not maybe they will add one. The people who created dsl read the forums maybe the will be kind enough to tell us when the donation  has been made.
If not keep in mind they indicated they was against this ideal. But I am for the honor system first.

I am new to this forum. Not really new to linux, I used it years ago. But I am not a C or systems type programmer. Just database stuff. Period.

Ive used puppy and fedora recently. Have considered other things. Of course I am in the same case as some that at work I have to use windows. So I will be using VMware with some install of Linux as the host. I would love to use DSL as the host.

Now I realize someone does not have to be a systems programmer to make changes to DSL or linux. However, as pointed out by the first poster, there is a lot to do, read and study. I already have my hands full with studying web technologies. (PHP, MySQL, PEAR, etc.). For instance when I installed Fedora the screen would keep blanking if idle. I changed the power settings in the menu to not allow that. I changed the screen saver settings, to not allow it. Still it happened. After three days I finally found a solution on the net.

Anyhow I appreciate how many feel some of us should learn a lot of this stuff on our own. And a lot of us will, albeit gradually. However, again as the original poster pointed out, time is a commodity in some cases. So if we have resources (money), we are willing to pay for something instead. To speed its development. In fact a lot of open source is produced in this manner. We benefit in getting the thing we want sooner. The community benefits in getting it open source.

So rather than suggest a price, I would like to request one. I need DSL to run VMware Server natively. The reason I need server as opposed to player is because it can create virtual machines as well as play them. I would like this to be all on one bootable. I dont need a lot of other things on the CD. SSH yes. A tiny editor and browser (dillo?) yes. Just in case I have to do a couple of things outside of the virtual machines. Lastly I would like, if possible, the entire thing to run in ram.

Now I dont have any idea how much work this would be. Someone else posted a list of the things to do to create an alpha Vmware server with DSL. But I do not know if this is burned back to CD. If it is a lot of work to accomplish then I understand someone not doing it. If it could be done for a reasonable fee then it is something I am interested in. Remeber the VMware bare metal OS is 7grand. So reasonable would mean being able to compete with that.

Additionally, Puppy Linux allows one to write back to the DVD/CD if it was burned in multisession. (Dvds have to originally be burned from linux as a Doze bootable multisession DVD messes up). So being able to load DSL from a multisession, create a virtual machine with the already isntalled VMWare server on a hard drive, then being able to burn that VM back to the very same DVD would be a bonus.

Mostly this message is for the actual creators/developers of DSL. John I think? or Roberts? As he said above, right of first refusal.

I can be reached at this board or my email boscagarda-programming@yahoo.com. I will respond within a few hours of getting any emails, I check it throughout the day.

Posted by aoirthoir on Aug. 26 2006,15:26
To clarify a couple of things. When I say to compete with, I hope it is obvious I do not want to pay several thousand for this. If it is even able to be done. Second I forgot the link to someone who says he has it running. (Yes I pmed him already)

That's an excellent analogy, humpty. This phenomenon is an inevitable problem when giving software away for free, or when undercharging for tickets for a gauranteed sell out. Now, undercharging for tickets is a marketing ploy, for overall financial gain, but free software makers are doing it out of the kindness of their hearts.

If somebody pays me to write a software program for them, and allows me to keep ownership, and I just download something FOSS, make a few tweaks, and get paid for it, is that fair to the original devs?

If I give my brother a cool video game for Christmas, and he sells it to his friend for $50, is that fair to me? If I spend a Saturday helping a friend repair his beat up couch, and then he sells the couch for $300, is that fair to me?

The answer is: Fair? Probably not, but somewhat debatable. Possible, going to happen? Definitely. Where there is a need, there is a market. That isn't likely to ever change.

Hey Guys, 'long-time-no-see

After loading dsl on my latest play system I saw that Xfoil is now in the MyDSL menue and it works quite well here on my couch computer.

Apparently  "Clacker"  produced the extension.

I have just donated $40 to DSL through thier pay-pal account.

BTW: I apologise for being so slow on this but my DSL box died and I havent been here for months.
