Still waiting for smallerForum: DSL Ideas and Suggestions Topic: Still waiting for smaller started by: kerry Posted by kerry on April 23 2006,01:15
I would like to see that small dsl with no apps installed just the dsl extension browser, so we can select what apps we want. Maybe even just a easy way to uninstall the apps that are installed by default. The reason is i would love to use the extra space that those apps are taking up.Example: Firefox1.? is installed but it's to old so i don't use it,i run the newest firefox from /home/dsl/.firefox. so that means there are 2 firefoxs taking up that precious ram space. Another one is emelfm, my mom can't get the hang of that so i use rox. All the graphics, sound and office stuff we don't use either, i prefer mplayer and openoffice, but there's no room for open office and abiword just barely squeezes in. Then there's all that net stuff, we only use a web browser. So there it is my wish, thanks Posted by hswerdfe on April 23 2006,20:27
good idea kerry.I agree with you I wouldn't mind getting rid of most of the apps if it means getting the 2.6 kernel the real advantage I see to DSL is the form factor. I use it on 4 computers regularly and none of them support USB boot.. but all have usb ports. I say remove elm, & firefox, the games, all 4 wallpapers put in the 2.6 kernel and maybe some extra libraries. then any of the cool aps that you want you could load off USB. Na, i diffently want the smaller 2.4 kernel. i just don't want the apps included, i want just the "dsl extenstion browser" so i can add just the apps i actually use. Everything else i like or can work with. It would just be better for older systems and anybody can click on the dsl browser and select what they want. For example if someone has very low ram and just wants the web browser and that's all, they just fireup the extension browser ,select there web browser(firefox,opera,dillo,etc..) and click on download and there done, they have just exactly what they want, no more and no less.

We had a poll on this and it was about 50-50.I think there are too many users who would not know what to do. Maybe when the docs/wiki can catch up and the concept of saving the extensions becomes secondhand. Who knows. Posted by kerry on April 24 2006,06:11
Thanks roberts, but it could be one of those optional dsl versions. Those that have already gotten there feet wet would love to control what they want.moohahaAnyways that's why it's called a wish. Posted by Guest on April 24 2006,11:21
Why dont you just do minimal debian install and start there to build your "dream linux"? It would be allmost the same as dsl without any applications, little bit bigger.Or do a appless dsl remaster. Or do a minimal slackware install. Or do Arch linux install with only basic stuff installed. Or minimal install of any linux distro. And i think that John and Roberts are busy enough to keed dsl and dsl-not up and running. Maybe a community project? Who knows. Posted by kerry on April 24 2006,12:21
fxb, i run DSL on a old laptop that has no harddrive, cdrom is if'y and floppy sucks. So i need there fantastic work that i can load straight into ram and run from there. My biggest problem is just getting it into ram, like i said the cdrom is if'y and some times it takes several tries but once i get it there it runs like a champ. Like everyone i prefer certain apps and i am limited by my ram. I'm not asking them to stop what there doing and jump right on this, as i can adjust my needs to make what's currently available work for me. If it were possiable for me to install a os it would be mepis or ubuntu. But i am just making a idea and a suggestion so no big deal.

sounds extremly good to me [*1] => it basically refers to my < thread >[*1]making everything optional - what is not essentially needed for running DSL with GUI :> Posted by frankseu on April 24 2006,14:59
I do have the same wish since a long timeto the dsl comunity to have a ExtremeSmallLinux and haveing the possibility to add all via extentions. As you i also got the answers from the forum : "Why don't you strip down".. "Why don't you use another distro"... "Why don't you install any base linux and then add"... My answers are also alway the same : 1. I can't do the strip because auf the dependencies 2. I like DSL ! why take an other one ? 3. I do not have eough know how to generate my own live cd. 4. Why should be the wheel be drafted twice ? 5. Doesn't it fit into how dsl is desinged (more or less) ? More than in any other distribution ? I am always getting a kind of fu*** off and go away. I do not know why. Once again as i told many times before : I love te work the devs have done and still doing there ! This is a suggestion/wish ! Frank Posted by roberts on April 24 2006,15:09
I hear you. I am not telling anyone to go away. All suggestions are taken to heart.I do have such an animal. Maybe the infrastructure that I have created with the MyDSL system is mature enough. Personally I felt the docs were not. It does give me great satisfaction to see those of you who "really do get it". And finally who knows, maybe there will a DSL-M. M for mini, micro, mine, minime, modular, modern, .... Posted by Guest on April 24 2006,15:23
Kerry, i didnt know that you dont have a hard drive. Another small "dsl stylish" distro is Puppy linux, it has great "remaster" guide http://www.puppyos.com/puppy-unleashed.htm Sounds simple to me. < http://www.puppyos.com/ > Posted by hswerdfe on April 24 2006,16:17
< morphix >has a method of remastering. by starting with the base system they call it the "base-iso" and it bairly fits on a buisness card CD..but it has no GUI. they also have "Morphing-Morphix" which helps make your own live CD. I have not fully investigated it so I'm not sure if it would be possible to mod "base-iso" to include X+fluxbox or not. and maybe include apps on a USB. IMHO: The big advantage of DSL is the form factor, boot of buisness CD that fits in my wallet, with, some other data+apps, on usb stick. 1. easy to carry 2. cheap to replicate 3. easy root on 99% of computers. yeah this would be truly awesome please do so ^^ Posted by tuxedo on April 24 2006,19:05
very nice concept and if there is still names to find to the 2 new distribs, the small one and te bigger one, i'd suggest lilliput dsl as a nickname to dsl-m, gargantua dsl as a nickname to dsl-n, though i hope it will not grow so big. Posted by kerry on April 24 2006,19:32
[QUOTE] Kerry, i didnt know that you dont have a hard drive.Another small "dsl stylish" distro is Puppy linux, it has great "remaster" guide http://www.puppyos.com/puppy-unleashed.htm Sounds simple to me. Tried puppy, but it dosen't have the drivers i need for the pcmcia ethernet card so i get stuck with no internet. I much prefer DSL over anything else at this point as i learn more about it i will proably try a remaster from my desktop, but right now i'm just way to green(noob) at it. DSL-M sounds like the beast we want, wooohoo. I been thinking, that besides the control panel and dsl extension browser were going to need the emelfm file manager for those that load extensions from usb's and hd's, but that's it, no other app's. Man you've already got me dreaming about this perfect DSL.One more wish The looks in the version 2.1 rc2 is way better than the current purple look, it's cleaner and more proffesinal looking. Is it at all possiable to include that desktop(Fizzure2) with that same system. Sorry just can't help myself.lol Posted by doobit on April 24 2006,20:12
You can install that look yourself in any version. The default is not permanent.
Posted by kerry on April 24 2006,22:25
Yes i could,but.... one more wish please.

I am very happe to be not alone. I did not mean you, roberts, in person. You are one of the "others" who takes wishes and suggestions, thinks about and does not "block" from the startup. I know that maintaning/developing DSLthis is a lot of work and we all have an "other live" in addition. Please let me join the "please do so ^^ group". I think i finally got my desktop set up so it looks decent(not that it didn't look good stock).< http://img422.imageshack.us/img422/3789/mylook9gw.png > Posted by charliez on April 28 2006,14:46
I would like to throw in a vote for an app stripped down DSL base ISO. I am starting to tinker with an old laptop and if DSL didn't have all these things for me to figure out how to remove, I'd be that much closer to putting on the one app I do need... CITRIX ICA.

Please let me join the "please do so ^^ group", too. A DSL-M would be a very very big gift to the community, roberts. Don't let it be just a dream, give it a reality!!! yours z PS: tipping at the moment from my old box with 2.4 rc2 installed as frugal; it just works like a charm, congratulations! Sure a remastered version (DSL-M) would be nice. However, I think I've got a simpler solution:Just put all the .dsl, .uci files for the default apps in the /optional directory. This would definitely make remastering easier and more uniform. |
