hi!is someone interessted in creating a special editon of DSL? what will be needed? - GUI (as already in current DSL releases) - working-LAN (as already in current DSL releases) - vmwareplayer - DSL xvesa setup - SSH - FTP-client for transfering virtual machines to host PC (DSL) what will not be needed? - the other apps in DSL: editors, word-processing, ... so to put it in a nutshell: iīm looking for a DSL-release which has all the driver capabilities as current releases BUT with only one app included: VMwareplayer :> what do you think? anyone interessted in creating this OS? my linux-skills arenīt good enough - otherwise i would create this OS-version by myself and share it with you :> Posted by desnotes on April 23 2006,16:17
I have done some research in using a host OS for Qemu instead of VMWare. I would suggest that if all possible you do not include a GUI. You have more resources running without.desNotes Posted by dWLkR on April 23 2006,20:49
sounds ok for me - what do you have?(1) this host-os should be really easy to install or should be bootable from a CD or USB-stick :> but it has to be able to mount the HDD... (2) is it possible to convert vmware to qemu? (3) any further ideas concerning a DSL as a vmplayer-player OS? :> Posted by desnotes on April 23 2006,22:54
Qemu runs without being installed on the host OS. It will also run with the Host being Linux, Windows and others. I have run a guest DSL os on top of DSL running in text mode (DSL 2) and it does nicely with a decent CPU (I was using 750MHz).There is also a Qemu accelerator which does need to be installed. It could be installed on the host OS and then when starting the guest, it would run even faster. The host could be run from a CD or USB and would not even need a HDD, although it certainly would be possible. The advantage I see with Qemu is that the complete guest OS with Qemu can be installed on a USB and started anywhere on nearly any computer and leaving no files on the host computer. desNotes Posted by dWLkR on April 24 2006,12:29
sounds interessting - can u upload this distro somewhere maybe with a short instruction?iīd suggest www.rapidshare.de :> iirc u can upload up to 50 megs in one step... Posted by dare2dreamer on May 08 2006,18:33
I was unaware that vmware would run without an Xsession, due to it's front-end's dependance on GTK and the like. Do you have any solid information about running vmware without an Xserver? I'd be very interested in seeing it. Posted by 300c_pilot on May 21 2006,05:01
I also do not believe that VMware player will run without an xserver, but VMware Server (Free Version) will run without xserver. Setting it up would be difficult without xserver, but you can connect with the vmware client from another machine and install & configure a new os.

Here is a link that may be of interest to those who want to run DSL using VMWare player, i.e. host =Windows , guest = Linux < http://www.marthomacentre.org.uk/ml/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=17#25 > |
