Unused files and folders create confusion.  They should be removed to make the system simplier to use - or perhaps gutted and replaced with comments as to what files are used instead.  Here's the list I've come up with so far:

remove /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts (superceded by /etc/network/interfaces)

remove /etc/resolve.conf (uncertain whether it's used, but I know it duplicates what's in the /etc/network/interfaces file)

remove /etc/hostname (it's ignored - not sure what's superceding it)

remove /floppy (superceded by /mnt/floppy?)

remove /none if it has no purpose

create /etc/sysconfig/network (with a comment redirecting users to /etc/network/interfaces)

Remove /lib/modules/2.4.26/net/wireless/ipw2100 (empty)

Remove /lib/modules/2.4.26/madwifi (empty)

Remove the header in /etc/modules.conf.  This file probably is not auto-generated because the update_modules tool does not exist in DSL.  I'm not even certain that this file is being used.

We have been through this exercise several iterations.
Many of these are used in the compressed image installs of DSL.

It is used. Again a typical hard drive install question.
The knoppix-autoconfig script regenerates many items that would affect a traditional hard drive install. Many that you would likely  expect to be in the rc.d scripts. Little work or interest has been done to change the way Klaus Knoppix orginally had the knoppix-autoconfig script during bootup for a traditional hard drive install. Again, it is not our focus..
