Firefox 2.0 in DSLForum: DSL Ideas and Suggestions Topic: Firefox 2.0 in DSL started by: meo Posted by meo on Nov. 17 2006,21:18
Hi there!I would suggest that firefox 2.0 would be put into DSL instead of the old one. If there are space problems I wouldn't miss ted in the distro. Have fun, meo Posted by dabbler on Nov. 26 2006,09:50
Firefox 2 can be found under MyDSL under 'Testing'. The only problem I have is that once downloaded and installed, each time I reboot and do a re-install, the download starts from the beginning, instead of using the previously downloaded file (firefox-2.0-gtk1.uci) which I save under ~/downloads. The directory gets backed up on reboot. Any help? Can the re-installation be made using command line?EDIT: Dumbass me just found 'load local'. Posted by ^thehatsrule^ on Nov. 26 2006,18:56
I think meo meant replacing the current firefox in the default DSL image.Command-line would be "mydsl-load" Posted by meo on Dec. 04 2006,08:51
Hi guys!Great job with DSL 3.1. Excuse me for "nagging", but is it impossible to get firefox 2.0 in a future varsion of DSL? I'm just asking. Have fun Y'all, meo Posted by kerry on Dec. 04 2006,09:24
The problem with the newer firefox is it's bigger & depends on gtk2. If it were my choice i would go for seamonkey, it's got the speed of dillo with all the features of firefox. here's the requirements for seamonkey, it can be built with gtk1->System Requirements * The following library versions (or compatible) are required for the GTK1 build: glibc 2.2.5, XFree86 3.3.x, GTK 1.2.x, Glib 1.2.x. Red Hat Linux 7.0, Debian 3.0, and SuSE 7.3 (or later) installations should work. The recommended build (GTK2) requires glibc 2.3.2, XFree86 4.3.x, GTK 2.x, glib 2.x, libstdc++-3.3. * Intel pentium class processor (233 MHz or faster recommended) * 64 MB of RAM * 100 MB of free hard disk space (significantly less space is required if you reduce the cache size) Posted by meo on Dec. 04 2006,10:30
Hi kerry!Yes, I understand that it is bigger (It takes up 9977 kb but seamonkey is much bigger with it's 13486 kb) but it doesn't depend on GTK2. It is already found in the mydsl repository compiled with GTK1 and I'm using it now. I just find it sad to have the old firefox and never using it. In my eyes it is a waist of precious space. I wouldn't mind that it would be dropped in favor of other useful things either, not necessarily firefox 2.0 even if I would prefer that. Have fun, meo Posted by carlosfferry on Dec. 04 2006,13:45
I don't find that a good idea, firefox2 has serverls "high levels bugs" incluiding remote command execution. Indeed, nobody should use firefox 2 until it get patched.

Hi carlosfferry!That might be so, but I think the advantages are bigger than the possible disadvantages. The Firefox 1.0.6 that comes with DSL doesn't show certain webpages correctly and that is one of the main reasons I don't use it anymore. And behind a firewall using DSL-embedded on a CF-card I feel pretty safe with Firefox 2.0. Have fun out there in cyberspace, meo Posted by RigasW on Dec. 05 2006,16:57
Hello everybody,my plan is to use a PXE based DSL as a browsing station for guests and friends. So what do I need: An up to date browser (firefox 2.0) Plugins (Adobe Flash Player) PDF-viewer An easy way to listen to CDs (xMMS does not find my CDs, no idea why ...) May be an ICQ client May be a way to listen to internet radio (but I have no clue, how I find radio stations that support xMMs ...) Nothing will ever be saved on that machine, so security is not a big issue in this case. My guests can check their mail, news or the weather forecast ... So I vote for firefox 2.0 Regards Rigas Posted by kerry on Dec. 05 2006,19:56
Maybe you should have a look at a DSL relative-> < http://kioskcd.com/ >

Hi Kerry,thanks for the idea ... I will give it a try ... Rigas Posted by RigasW on Dec. 07 2006,13:46
Hi Kerry,I like the kioskCD a lot. Built in java and a flashplayer!! But compared to the latest DSL the hardware detection is not so good. I cannot deal with my usb mouse and with the built in nic on one of my pcs. (Both work with dsl 3.1) |
