SATAForum: DSL Ideas and Suggestions Topic: SATA started by: PhrozenFear Posted by PhrozenFear on Jan. 03 2007,00:58
Now, I've read a few places about how DSL doesn't support it, because of some various things (Mainly, the 2.4.27 kernel vs. the 2.4.31 which has SATA support). My biggest question is if / when will DSL work with Serial ATA ? Many new systems come with SATA drives, not PATA drives. My laptop has only SATA. My desktop has only SATA. Lots of people are switching to SATA, because of greater transmit rates / sizes / lower costs, etc. Just a question I haven't seen answered yet. Thanks, >>Marc 73 de VE6MSP Posted by ^thehatsrule^ on Jan. 03 2007,03:03
2.4.27 introduces SATA support in upstream kernel. Current DSL uses 2.4.26.If you want a simple solution, you can use the 2.4.31 kernel versions of DSL which include the sata modules (replacing scsi for space). See "Notes" page or try out v2.1b. Some users did replace the kernel with 2.4.27 and created some custom iso's but that was a while ago. You could also try DSL-N (2.6) These drives are cheaper where you are? Lucky! And I'm pretty sure this has been asked around before, just somewhere you forgot to check :P Posted by PhrozenFear on Jan. 05 2007,05:56
Yeah, SATA is cheap here. It's about 5$ more for a SATA disk than an IDE disk of the same size. And my lappy comes with onboard SATA.I tried DSL-N, but it was wierd. It had partial support for SATA, only showing one of the partitions, not two (which were both quite clearly there when I rebooted in windows). Will try 2.1b. Thanks for the idea, mate. What could be the problem, when SATA will not be recognized from DSL 2.1b ? "DSL SATA" is used as boot-parameter.The system reports "Checking for sata .. none". And afterwards with "Can't find Knoppix filesystem, sorry. Dropping you to a (very limited) shell". Used System: ASUS Pundit P1-AH2. Used Drive for the live-CD: Samsung SATA - DVD burner. I have checked the computers settings in its bios. You can not change much related to sata there. How to continue? |
