Currently, to see if myDSL has a particular program in it's repository, you have to go to the download site, and click on UCI, UNC, Testing, and two or three other categories depending on the program, such as Network and System for a networking utility, or Games, Applications, and Gtk2 for a game. This is a waste of time, and prone to errors.

I recommend having a simple, downloadable text list of the currently available extensions, such as the one debian provides. See:

My current solution is a script that downloads all of the myDSL extension lists. Then I can grep them from the command line. It would be much easier to just have to download one file, though.

On a similar note, the myDSL repository could use a re-organization. It's organizational structure focuses too much on format, and too little on content. This lack of organization is most of what forces us to download so many pages in the first place.

I completely agree. In fact, when I last saw John, at LinuxWorld (August), I talked about the fact that we have outgrown the current category system currently used. Since I have been doing all the core DSL development, I asked John to take over the extensions. I need help and cannot do everything. To date, this has not happened. I was told that a new extension search program would be setup on the website. That this would be ready by my release of 4.0.

I realized that too much of a change would disable prior versions of DSL's extension browser. But we cannot continue with the current setup it is too labor intensive as well as too many places to look. I don't know what John has or is working on. I suppose in the interim I can create a downloaded master list.

We already have a Lua/Fltk extension browswer/downloader why would we want to go backwards to an old interface of whiptail. I have been trying to get rid of whiptail scripts. I would rather have a consistent interface that is a little more modern. As our knowledge and supported features increase in murgaLua so does the appearance and functionailty of our choosen GUI tool.

I typically use a search engine, i.e. google using the "site:" keyword, (although it might not pick them up new extensions right away)
There's also list.txt you could use for now (i.e. < ftp://ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distributions/damnsmall/list.txt > )

Hey hats, I think you just found something that John must be working on. By looking at the time stamp of its creation date. I also see some perl scripts with the same date.
