Now that the game DooM 3 is out for linux, I have been wondering.

If someone put in all of DooM 3's dependencies into dsl, wouldn't DooM 3 run faster on it? Since you don't need that much power to run dsl... Just a thought.

I've allways wondered how much RAM you could save up in Windows if you only ran DirectX and the other part of Windows that the games needed to run.

Now that some big games are coming for Linux, isn't this actually possible to do?... Take SuSE for example, it eat some resources, and that are resorces that the hardware hungry game DooM 3 could use.

What do you think all the hardcore gamers would say if DSL could run DooM 3 with a 5 or 10% performance boost contra Windows / Heavy linux distro? It would definitly be noticed.

The consoles don't have that much power if you put them up against high end computers, still they run the games with some decent effects, and PS2 at least, don't have to run anything besides the actual game.

Just me thinking loud.  Don't know if this is possible or not...

If it is I bet one of the uber gurus could whip out a DOOM3.dsl hehe

It's not open source, but ID released a Linux installer.

Something tells me that the non-existent 3d graphics acceleration support in the default Kdrive Xservers that are used in DSL might be a stumbling block...

It requires OpenGL or Mesa, as cbagger said.  If you think you can get OpenGL working properly in DSL, I'd be most pleased to hear about it.
I'd love to be able to make Cube and Wings3D extensions.

Please, don't let my pessimism stop you from creating such a *.dsl

Knock yourself out.

Maybe this was the wrong forum to post in it.

I was thinking generally. I don't have the time or skills to make such a dsl.

What I was wondering is that if this is technical possible. If it is, I am wondering if this wouldn't boost performance, since the OS itself take less resources?

well, no.

Unless you apt-get Xfree86 and install accelerated drivers.

OOh i have to go install Doom 3 on DSL now!!!

As for Suse eating resources, that's mostly KDE doing the eating, and a few services that can be disabled.  Sometimes I run games in the place of a window manager, which could give you the bare essentials you're looking for.

No you are in the right forum.

It doesn't hurt to ask, even when the answer is:

It is not possible without making major changes to the OS windowing system, a difficult task that is bound to prove troublesome even if it was successfull.

i am going to be doing some nice 3d games as dsls soon, tuxcart etc, i don't think doom3 would work as a mydsl, it seems that there are just some things it needs to run (that could be packaged as a mydsl) and the installer, which could maybe be included in the dsl automatically put in your home dir. however i cannot be bothered to do a doom3.dsl, and i don't have the cd to test the installer. if you manage it then tell me and i will offer congrats.

this is slightly of topic but i run quake2 on a bartPE cd without directx suppport so maybe quake2 might be a easyer to port to dsl.

There is already a quake2.dsl in the repository..
Add the pak*.pak files from any quake II CD disk, and play away..

The .pak files are NOT freely distributable..

I almost got cedega to work for that very low resources thingy but there are way too many other things to chase down just get a game running I gave up.
