Hey, I wanted to know if it's possible to use the 2.6 kernel for DSL.

I am, as you may be aware, building a MyDSL ISO maker script that's nearly complete.  My next update to the script will include support for creating a customized isolinux.cfg.

I've already gotten a copy of the memtest86 kernel for use as an optional install, and that seems to work well, but using kernel 2.6 seems to me like it would be a bigger challenge.

For example, would Linux behave the same way?  I know Knoppix 3.4 (the distro I understand the v0.8.x DSL ISO is built from) has a minirt26.gz to go with it's shiny new kernel, and I think I read something about the 2.6 kernel being more effective in multitasking, but to be honest, I don't exactly know the benefits and drawbacks of using 2.6 over 2.4.  Additionally, I don't even know if all the DSL-specific scripts will work under 2.6.

If this hasn't been tried, I'd be happy to post the results of my monkeying around here.

In the meantime, I wish to post a new PHP extension.  The php.tar.gz currently is 4.3.9 and has no support for FTP or the GD2 libraries.  I wish to include these, built from-source, in a simple .tar.gz package.  If anyone has any caveats on this I should know about, please inform.

it could do very wierd things, but give it a try :)

Finished and submitted the PHP extension, and ran across my first snag in using the 2.6 kernel...  modules.

The 2.6.6 modules are not in the dsl-0.8.4.iso -> KNOPPIX file (removed to save space, and rightly so).  This means that in order to support kernel 2.6, I'd have to remaster on-the-fly with the modules built in (the mydsl search process doesn't happen until after hotplug runs, so no patchy there).

As such, no kernel 2.6 support.  My humblest apologies to any who was waiting for it with bated breath.

(Checks breath, realises it is bated, cleans teeth and gargles) :p

I'm sure DSL will have kernel 2.6 eventually, but probably not before 2.8 is out.

what i meant by that was, likely, when knoppix stops using the 2.4 kernel as the default kernel, we will follow shortly thereafter.

and Debian starts using the 2.6 kernel.

Could be a while.

sarge should be moved into stable in less than 6 months (or at least so say the rumors), and it has a few 2.6 kernels (I think)

The nice thing about debian is that even though its not cutting edge its "STABLE" and driven by tried and true and proven software

Cutting edge stuff especially the 2.6 kernels are stable, but havent stood the test under fire as much as the 2.4 kernel has

"Fix it till its broke" isnt in the debian philosophy!!

However, with that said... /me cant wait to see DSL take on the 2.6!

I wonder if KNOPPIX will make separate 2.4 kernel and 2.6 kernel releases
