I understood the need for both glinks-hacked and Dillo when Firefox was not available, but...

What's Dillo for now? Firefox is capable of handling the myDSLGUI, is it not?

Dillo is for people with old hardware, and allows them to launch a web browser without having to wait an extensive amount of time and not have to suffer through the pains that new users may experience with a text based browser. One purpose of this small, light distribution is to give users with old hardware an ability to revive their hardware and use it in an effective manner.

The GTK version of Links is no longer in DSL.
It has been replaced with Firefox.
The cli version is still there for use when the XServer is not available.
It works great for blogs , text pages like google, and such..
Many folks like to work from shell, rather than GUI.

Also, the MyDSL app, and the "Getting Started" guide
all work thru dillo, because of it's speed and low-ram requirements.
It's especially effective on low ram, and CPU challenged systems.
So, Dillo is here to stay...

I use low ram pc's with DSL, as well as not so low ram pc's.
However, i use Dillo when and where i can. You guys are absolutely correct in wanting to keep Dillo, as it has it's place and purpose for many of us.

yeah, firefox crashes my 64 mb ram laptop when i try to use it on the live cd.

I agree with Green. Dillo is definitely of value to me on my old old laptop when I quickly want to look at a regular bookmarked page including the DSL site. It miles quicker than Firefox (slow generally) and Dillo's bookmarks are more accessable. It's nice to try integrated Firefox (as none of the earlier .DSL extensions worked for me) and it is a real feather in the hat for DSL but Dillo is really more in keeping with the 'keep it small' ethos maintained so far. It is inevitable that 'small' might need to be redefined by John and RobertS others at some point soon and the 50meg ISO maximum increased. Merry Xmas to you all.

Dillo is great for quick viewing of local *.html files

It is also good for older computers and it loads up faster on all computers. It is especially useful when running DSL embedded on a newer computer because programs run slower when using DSL embedded.

Firefox is nice for serious web browsing while booting up DSL natively on most computers.

Still, for older machines I recommend that you download and try out the Opera myDSL extensions.

Opera 6.12 is fast even on old computers like my Pentium 1 60Mhz machine

Dillo is a must, after all the hard work done by John and friends to upgrade it specially for DSL! It is a pain only on the rare occasion ;-)
The great thing about DSL is that it can work on old machines (BTW have you seen lynx at work?), but if we are at a newer machine, we can add X windows (maybe not quite well yet) /Open Office/Gimp/Mplayer etc from the options directory in seconds and get them to work!

Flexibility is the name! Customisable is the game.

I like DILLO because it doesn't seem to use Java or other internal
scripts. That's also the bad thing about it. How do I get FOXFIRE,
or an up-to-date NETSCAPE to use? Yahoo complains and wants
netscape 6+...
(No Java makes for a pretty secure system, I think.)

I think that the Firefox currently in DSL has a bug to where it doesn't handle extensions properly, but normally, you just install the jslib extension, and it works with /most/ JS sites.

If Sun opens Java, which it looks like they are going to, you can expect full JS support in Firefox very soon.

OT: I use Dillo a lot. Especially on my little Toshiba 420CDS laptop (which I'm using to type this), because Firefox is a slug on slower machine.

If the built-in Firefox doesn't work for you, install the operal.dsl or opera.uci extensions from the myDSL repository.

Opera is nice because it allows you to mimic different browser versions to the web sites. So you can appear as MS Internet Explorer, Mozilla/Netscape, Opera your choice.

Opera 6 also runs well on old hardware and even the 7.x versions still run better than the other full featured browsers on old hardware.

FYI, the extension bug should now be fixed (Kent's hard work) and it should also run a little faster now too (decompressed the jar files).

Good dillo is here to stay, I already feared by the title of this topic that after links-hacked dillo would be gone too ;).
I use dillo all the time, doesn't matter if I'm on a fast computer or not. But I think the dillo in DSL should be updated to 0.8.4.
I think the newest version is more usable (even without frames). It solves many bugs. But you probably already did many patches on dillo, making it hard work to update to 0.8.4.
Anyway, dillo 0.7.3 or 0.8.4 , it's great

Dillo is fast and quite good for usual web sufing. Firefox is useful to look at the many flash sites with the flash plugin. However Firefox des not support SVG yet, so we need Mozilla full version!

I use Dillo over firefox anytime i dont need to fast setup proxies or login to hotmail.
Dillo is a pretty good browser.
