Not sure if this is the right place for the question, so please bear with me.

Is it possible to have an outgoing email server running in DSL?  I'm pretty much a complete neophyte to linux, I know enough to be dangerous with it.   I tried it out at work one afternoon at work and thought it would be handy to receive AND send through my home email account at work, but my ISP disallows any SMTP traffic from outside their network, and my office uses exchange and doesn't have an SMTP server that I could use that I'm aware of.  I know there's the potential that it could be abused, but it would just be kind of handy to be able to send and receive from home rather than just receive.

You could SSH into your machine at home and send/receive email that way.  I do that on a regular basis with mutt.  If you're running Windows at home you could set up a VNC server on your box at home and use the vnc client included with DSL at work to log into your machine at home and check email that way.
