Adding 'Home' and dpkg?Forum: DSL Ideas and Suggestions Topic: Adding 'Home' and dpkg? started by: Daniele Posted by Daniele on Sep. 28 2003,09:24
I absolutely love DSL.However I'd like very much to see dpkg installed by default, plus an iconized 'home' The above mentioned features would, in my opinion, be a huge bonus for people who actually want to 'use' DSL (as opposite to the ones who want just to play with it). I know, you can download and install dpkg, but I'll be bluntly honest with you: I found the task too daunting. As I am not exactly a newbie, I suppose quite a few people will have the same problem. How does anybody else feel about it? Posted by vhangell on Sep. 28 2003,10:58
Me too! I would like dpkg to be installed too BUT since there isnt much space, it is left as a separate download. The target disc is about 52MB (a shaped minidisc) and the iso is already 48+MB.About the icon you can create it yourself (it is a lnk file) or you may ask john to include it on the next release. I'm sure he'll attend to it. Posted by Daniele on Sep. 28 2003,12:07
Thank you!

just out of curiosity, what did you find daunting about getting dpkg?it really isnt that hard to do. its all in the faq, it only takes a few seconds plus the download time, as for the iconized home, i see it as unnecessary, since Emelfm starts in your home directory just my 2 cents Posted by kevinubia on Sep. 28 2003,22:12
I think that what many of us want is a an alternative distro based on DSL but meant to run on a 256MB+ RAM machine (using "toram" which is awesome) and would would fit on an 8cm (185MB) mini-CD ... so that just a few more things could be added, like:* dpkg (I tried the FAQ instructions but couldn't get it to work) * Firebird & Flash (pre-installed) * gAIM (instead of nAIM) * apache/PHP/MySQL with web-based config/start/stop (with SSL if possible) * Samba server (with a startup wizard like the latest Knoppix has) * a dynamic DNS client with an easy wizard I looked into Slackware-live but I like DSL much better. By leaving out KDE/Gnome & OpenOffice there should be plenty of space for things that us "power users" need. Posted by ivan on Sep. 28 2003,22:18
i agree, but only if youre gonna run straight from ram only.otherwise, theres no problem in apt-getting everything Posted by Daniele on Sep. 29 2003,00:22
Exactly, same here about the FAQs (I couldn't get dpkg to work) and same here about wanting an alternative distro with more apps. How many or how few it doesnt really matter, because as Ivan correctly said, we can install more with apt. What about a script that installs dpkg, very much like the one that installs Firebird? hrm.there shouldnt be a problem installing dpkg. /me wonders what could be wrong Posted by nick on Oct. 04 2003,22:39
Would you guys mind stating exactly what went wrong while setting up dpkg? We might be able to help. I'm a bit curious because all you are really doing is extracting some files into /var/lib/, then running apt.

What is wrong is that you are assuming that we can all work from the command line, and forget that many of us simply can't, mainly because many of us are M$ refugees.Just to make clearer what I mean, my favourite distro is Libranet, which is good at any llevel of knowledge. And BTW, I know that in my first post I said that I am not exactly a newbie, but my experince is more in installing linux distros, rather than in using the command line.

In the next version I will have a script that will do this for you.

Thanks John, I know you are a nice guy Posted by Silyx on Oct. 08 2003,05:33
What I think a good middle ground would be for a dpkg install something like firebird. Just right-click goto a got bandwidth menu and click to install dpkg. Although after reading some of the posts I still don't know if this would work too well becaust apt-get is run from the command line so you would still need to be able to work the command line even if the install was easier.

Running apt from the command line is very easy. and in case anybody found it difficult they can always install synaptic:# apt-get update # apt-get install synaptic Posted by ivan on Oct. 08 2003,14:22
the command line is easy remember, the command line is your best friend. if you are a total linux newbie, you should familiarize yourself with the command prompt, because X wont always do everything. btw, now that you got apt-get working, isnt DSL the coolest distro evar? Most definitely! I want DSL to grow, prosper, and be known by as many people as possible (I don't have apt running just yet, I am waiting for John to come out with the next version where there'll be a script to easily install apt) Posted by old_lou on Feb. 18 2004,02:56
This is a direct quote from the DSL hard drive install info page (in case you have not seen it yet)The way to do this is to download the compressed dpkg file from here and move it to '/var/lib/', then uncompress it: tar zxvf dpkg.tar.gz After that just 'apt-get update' and then Apt should be fully functional. ============================================== Instruction word by word ---------------------- go to where you have downloaded it: to move it: mv dpkg.tar.gz /var/lib/ then: cd to /var/lib then: pwd (Present Working directory, making sure you are where you think you are) then: tar -zxvf dpkg.tar.gz or: gunzip dpkg.tar.gz then: tar -xvf dpkg.tar ================== then: apt-get update In the directory /etc/apt is a file called sources.list if you edit this file you can change the site that the apt-get gets it files from to edit it remove or put in a # at the start of the line you want to change. Putting in a # stops the line being read by the system in most files. If you are not sure how to use apt, do apt-get install synaptic this loads a graphical loader for apt. Then from a shell enter "synaptic" (no quotes) if you are using the net from within a firewall you may have to apend the followin line at the end of the apt.conf file in /etc/apt.conf (carefull with the exact syntax) Acquire::http::Proxy "http://username:password@(proxy.address):8080/"; you sometimes don't need the username and password so if your proxy is 192.4.300.6 iwill be: Acquire::http::Proxy "http://192.4.300.6:8080/"; anybody see an error in this please post so anybody knew will get it right without spending ours loooking for that syntax error "Ta" Posted by Modrak on Feb. 18 2004,20:26
How FluxBOX (BlackBOX too) hasn't got any file-explorer like those @#$% windows or KDE BTW EmelFM has /home/damnsmall on one side and / on the other Posted by old_lou on Feb. 19 2004,04:05
