Hi :)
I dont know if there is plenty of place left for diagnose-tools?... Some sure are nice but in my eyes DSL is rather a distribution tu actually use it...
You may consider wearing two business-cards with you ;o) one to show people how much Linu rocks (DSL that would be) and one to get those things all running and stuff and I think LNX-BCC is better suited for that.
An bootable 50-MB-Linux-distro with lots of admin-tools... But no X and no X-apps and all these nice things. Just a working machine for system-admins :o) Its not competing with DSL so here it is: < http://www.lnx-bbc.org/ >
They seem to be specialists in admin-stuff.
I'd say DSL is a specialist in Desktop-linux.  :o)
Hope that helps and maybe others thing different...
Greetings,
enthusi

Feather linux does a mini diagnostic CD which should fit the bill.
It not the standard download but a smaller one detailed on the download page.

You'll find info under < http://featherlinux.berlios.de >

I prefer the games to stay, as it is a genuine distro and not a tool bag :)

Found the link < http://featherlinux.berlios.de/tiny-list >

And 0.3.7 will have ettercap included as well - it'll be released in the next few days.

Hi!

I dont how most of you boot DSL, but i for sure go with the lovely "knoppix toram" option. Exellent speed and the cdrom free to read and burn cds.
I love the additional firefox script thing even concidered that it doesnt fit into the DSL-cd. From the discussion on this forum i think that it is no lie to state that a lot of people is missing that or that program. Why not then ad one additional DSL wellpacked business-cd with lots of xtra candy installscripts and/or run-from-cd-apps, for toram-users? Ok, it would be one more business-cd, but how much more physical space would it steal if i for example put the too of them in my wallet on the top of eachother? Would it fill up more space in the wallet than 3 millimeter in thickness and close to 0 mm in width/length? Ofcourse only people who like the idea of an extra cd would use it, and therfore everyone would be glad and happy.

However anyone could just burn a own cd with chosen aditional packages, but there would be benefits with a kind of "official" cd, customized especially to fill the most common needs for additional stuff in the DSL enviroment.

Well well, speculations, speculations. Maybe its just a shitty ide, but on the other hand, maybe its not. Who knows?, Im out of here.
Take care/
Björn.

Yes, i would love to see ettercap on dsl. If its small, you should be able to download it. If you want ettercap you probably have access to the internet, so whats the harm in clicking "download ettercap", waiting x seconds, and then running it.
Posted by blackfire on Mar. 02 2004,21:31
actually, as im probably going to try install ettercap, i could make a script for installing it as I go. You could add it to the next dsl, if it works of course.

Im assuming scripts are like batch files, lists of text commands with a .sh extension?

Ettercap 0.6b < 700kb  :)  Little but very useful application ;)
I have WAN but if i going to many people repair LAN then i search problem - then ettercap its a best program for it. If WAN crash then searching problem in LAN and i can't download ettercap from internet ... :(  I think ettercap on DSL its good sugestion ;)

I know, I know - my english is ... bad ;)

true, but how can you free up 700kb of space?

Personally, i think tuxnes isnt great gaming, im sure you can find much smaller and much more entertaining games. Games like tetris, pacman, sokoban (tuxnes, i know) are addictive, its great to have them around if bored.

How can free up 700kb of space? What for in DSL are two browser - Dillo & Links Hacker ? One of this browser ... deleting - then be more free space for ... ettercap, games etc ;)

Two text editor : Ted-gtk & Nedit - why ? One editor deleting .... then be free space for Ettercap :) Two www browser, two text editor ... change this for ettercap ;)

Personally, I can't see the point of Mutella. It's about the same size as ettercap, so maybe they could be swapped :)
Posted by ktosinski on Mar. 06 2004,20:40
HI All

Good think but ... why deleting Mutella if on CD is dual text editor and www browser ? :| Maybe deleting one of this program ;)

Ted is RTF (Rich Text format) editor...
Scite is plain-text editor to edit some config files...
So @#$% up and look what size is dillo and scite

Posted by ktosinski on Mar. 10 2004,16:47
OK, then delete .. mutella ;) (and links-hacked)

Then what small file-sharing app do you recommend we replace it with?

Once again, what minimalistic file-sharing app would you suggest we replace it with?  The nice thing about mutella is you can run it from the command-line, or you can run it from a browser for the nice gui look.  How can you distribute a desktop system without a file-sharing app?

And if we're talking about paring down browsers, I would get rid of dillo before I got rid of links.  Links can be run from console or gui, it supports frames, tables, javascript, ssl, tabbed browsing (in gui and console modes) and limited ftp support.  Unless it's changed, dillo implements an external, standalone server just for bookmarks.  Links simply has more functionality.

Actually, I think giftcurs is better, and it's smaller as well.
Posted by Modrak on Mar. 11 2004,20:38
My friend is main programer of links...don't take it :-?
Posted by John on Mar. 11 2004,22:28
Modrak, Links-H is a great browser, it takes a while to appreciate all that it can do.  Often I use it as a website diagnostic tool. Tell you friend I said thank you.

While ettercap is very powerful, I have some reservations about being responsible for putting it on a liveCD.  I would hate to have some script-kiddy using DSL to steal his co-workers passwords.

Posted by ktosinski on Mar. 12 2004,00:22
If some kids want "hack" with ettercap etc then ... download ettercap (or something) and .. do it !  This is unimportant where find it - on DSL or FeatherLinux, www, FTP. Ettercap is not only pass-reader - this is diagnostic tool.

drop links-hacked 4 w3m-img

bundle firefox (like bloody stupid) and prevent over-use of 'download 4 this boot only' ! ...

:D

Posted by guestope on Mar. 16 2004,06:51
and definitely include ettercap --- !

on a need to know.. educate the desktop user...

Posted by hasty on Mar. 16 2004,13:52
John you can't hold yourself responsible for what losers do with your baby
Ettercap is useful though..........

Personally I'd rather you got rid of Dillo (worlds ugliest icons) and kept links.

in haste.

Posted by Modrak on Mar. 16 2004,21:02
Somebody..my mother doesn't like links..she says that ugly...it isn't
It's true that dillo looks better
But 2 browser are democratic
