Fire foxForum: DSL Ideas and Suggestions Topic: Fire fox started by: chuck54 Posted by chuck54 on May 29 2004,16:54
I noticed today in this < article > that the next release of mozilla firefox is going to be significantly smaller. I can do most of my web browsing between dillo and gLinks, but both of them still have trouble with some web pages. I know you value compact programs, and with good reason. Is firefox getting small enough to be included yet? The article says 4.6mb for 0.9.I apologise if someone has covered this already, i haven't been keeping up to date recently. Well done for all the new stuff thats been added since I last checked. The myDSL updates sounds excelent. And the control panel! Posted by PhrozenFear on May 30 2004,03:31
Well, at the moment, FireFox is a downloadable module that you can download and install if you have the time and bandwidth to. But for the main LiveCD, I don't think that'll be included - the filesize of that alone is more than what two or three programs and all that come with them use, so probably not in the main install. You can d/l it, or an extension of it, and it'll work like a hot damn for ya, though.

Did anyone try to make a .dsl for firefox 0.9 alreay?I was thinking about trying it, but I expect lots of missing libraries which would make it hard, and this could make the .dsl rather big. However, it would be useful since I would like to use the mplayerplug-in which needs a recent version of firefox / mozilla. Firefox 0.9 requires GTK 2.0 or higher, and I think DSL has only GTK 1.2 out of the box. GTK 2 needs a lot more memory to function, not to mention the fact that the libraries are considerably larger than 1.2, so it's really not feasable to use gtk2 in a minimalist distro like DSL. now a .dsl of gtk2+firefox0.9 would be rather interesting... The abiword.dsl extension has pango and gtk2.0 within it.So, I wouldn't let that get in the way of making a nice extension. Open the abiword.dsl in a temp directory, and look in it.. That will give you an idea of how to place the extras, libs, wrappers, and GTK2.0 73 ke4nt Posted by wientjez on July 17 2004,14:28
The abiword package was a great help. I have been able to make a .dsl package for firefox 0.9.1 including pango and gtk2.I could be improved though, since I copied all fonts from abi since I didn't know which ones would be used bij firefox / pango / xft. Therefore, the package became rather big (11.5mb). I have one question though, maybe someone can help: I need to execute 'sudo ldconfig' after installing my .dsl files, to make all new libs are found. This is rather inconvenient, shouldn't mydsl-load take care of that? How is this handeled in other packages? If anyone would like to try / test my .dsl's (firefox 0.9.1 and mplayerplug-in), please let me know! At my box they are running wonderful (except mplayerplug-in won't do full screen properly, probably hardware related...) Posted by ke4nt1 on July 17 2004,17:26
See this post about making your wrappers aware of your libs locations...< http://damnsmalllinux.org/cgi-bin....wrapper > See this post about mplayer's unsizeability using our KDrive xservers... < http://damnsmalllinux.org/cgi-bin....mplayer > How about a xine plug-in, since the xine package DOES resize the screen at your command? And the current "firefox.tar.gz" weighs in at just under 10MB's, so your package isn't that much larger than the old 0.8 version! 73 ke4nt Posted by wientjez on Aug. 11 2004,22:34
Finally I completed my firefox 0.9.x dsl.I added a wrapper (/usr/bin/firefox.sh which executes sudo ldconfig and /usr/bin/firefox), and I took the recent 0.9.3 version from Mozilla.org. According to my own experience everything works fine, including icon and menu item. It's size is still about 11mb (including gtk2 libs and fonts). In case people are interested I would like to submit it to the testing area, but I don't know how to do that. Could you please let me know? Thanks in advance. Bye, Michiel W. You can email to ...extensions[at]damnsmalllinux[dot]org If your email cannot handle the file size, Let me know, and I'll send you a temp user/pass for uploading.. 73 ke4nt |
