A DSL sized live-distro with monkey/php/mysql ready to go would be very, very cool! :)

I think thats Apache is very heavy for DSL, but a DSL server edition is a very good idea! :;):

Anyone of the distribution development answered this question?

FTP server! I would much appreciate an ftp server.. I use a 2k box but it's soo much of a freakin waste.. 1.8gb's lost to what?!?!?!
OH also DYNDSL or some zoneedit dns compatible module.. And doc's on makeing TCC compatible with  programs "made file" stuff!

Actually.. there should be more "sub-distros", yes you heard well..
There could be the DSL workstation edition.. the DSL server edition... DSL developer edition... etc...etc...etc...

every of which could have programs to fit their job..

i myself would give making one of those a shot, but im not too familiar with the boot process, where all the servers and such are started, hence where modified.

i could give a shot at a gaming edition though :D

A server edition would be very cool IMO.

Im currently looking at transferring to a HD install so I can add a number of daemons.

I dont agree with going up a CD size. Larger distros are already provided by others. Its the 50MB thing that DSL does oh so well.

You know, DSL is built on Knoppix. If you go grab the re-mastering instructions for Knoppix, one could probably re-master it to just include the server bits and bytes for the CD, and keep it under 50mb. It'd be great if someone did this.

For an example of some re-mastering of knoppix, there's a DistCC livecd that's great for setting up a cluster of compilation nodes.

Any more news on this?  Anyone working on it or know of any alternatives?

im going to start working on this, it would have come in handy recently. Im going to try to squeeze apache on there as i prefer it over everything else.. ill keep you informed of how it comes along.

hey Ya I would love to c a DSL server DIstro it would be great 4 dudz like me who use old slow giveaway boxes to host a webpage

There is nothing to stop DSL from hosting a low traffic site now, I wouldn't put critical data on it, but the little Monkey server works pretty good.

As far as coming out with a server addition, we need time to work and pay our bills :).  I wish I was in a situation where I could just hack ISOs all day.

I'd love to see a Server disto of DSL.

Ive tried doing cut down versions of other distro's and they all end up over the 1gb mark.

Im aiming for <1gb with a DSL Server distro with the following.

Samba, ProFTPd, Apache, Perl, Mysql, And webmin.

If i make a less than 1gb server distro other than ghosting the drive is there a way to back it up to DVD or something ?

I understand your view John ..... i wish i had the time and the know how to do that too john :)

Great work on DSL :)

Any way of splitting an .iso?  Is that what you meant by ghosting?  Sorry, I'm not familair with that term. :)

You could always create the "base" distribution and then use apt-get to install the various programs that are needed.  This could be done by the user or through an installer like interface.

There is actually an old mini distro which fits this server bill very nicely. Tiny Linux, installs onto disk in around 50M. Apache and Samba Slack packs take it up to about 65M and it is then not much of a job to set it up for FTP / HTTP / Telnet / Samba file and print server (with swat). Its only an old 2.2.6 kernel (based on slack 4) but it works as well as it ever did. I love the sound of a DSL for each type of machine perhaps it would be possible to have it along the lines of a base DSL with modules. I fear it would no longer fit on a 50M CD though (and this is what amazes my friends).
Best regards to all
Jock

i would happy get envolved with a server edition of some type (hope its focused and still under 50MB) :P thats the reason im using dsl;

isnt apache between 2mb and 5mb in size, would it just be worth putting that in and pulling out some of the non-web server things like the games and speadsheets etc. only a thought

You could always create the "base" distribution and then use apt-get to install the various programs that are needed.  This could be done by the user or through an installer like interface.

What's preventing users from doing this now?  An "installer-like interface"?  Have you been keeping up with the synaptic thread?

What you're suggesting is a duplication of effort and totally unnecessary.  For one, DSL is a desktop distro.  If you're setting up a Server distro, then the xservers, games, fluxbox, web browsers, text-editors (well, except vi), sylpheed, xpdf, etc... ALL NEED TO GO.  All desktop apps are extraneous for your purposes and need to be cut.

So, by the time everything superfluous has been removed, basically, all you have left is the kernel, system progs and the filesystem.  If I were building a liveCD server distro, I'd upgrade the kernel to the 2.6.x series (they're snappier).

So, basically, when you get right down to it, DSL is NOTHING like the project you suggest.  The best thing one could do is to < learn how to create bootable CD-ROMS >, use Knoppix's hardware detection scripts, and create your own distro.  If you do stick with the Knoppix base, I'd downgrade to Debian stable and not offer the ability for users to upgrade.  That way you won't have as many user complaints about unstable software because your distro would be rock-solid.

My two cents, take it for what it's worth.
