Hello everybody,
will there be a dsl translation in other languages ? If not, why ? Because translations are difficult to do (technically I mean) ?
Because transaltion needs time and people ?
Because a choice af languages means an heavier distribution ?
For the 2nd point, Im' voluntereer ;)
Bye
Eric

DSL is by and large English-only because of its size - all the extra language data could add several megabytes to the distribution. Moreover, as the language data has already been removed, it could prove difficult to add it back again.

Perhaps language specific versions could be done...
that way it should not increase size too much.
however it would require much more storage on the mirrors.

You mean a distribution by language ? i.e. one dsl-english, one dsl-french, one dsl-deutsch, ...
Is it possible ? Is it hard to do ? It wouldn't give a heavier distrib, but at each new issue, the work would be hard no ?

Is it possible to get the 'other' languages (which I guess already exist in KNOPPIX) as additionals?

Anything is possible.

But consider that someone needs to do it.

New DSL versions come out often, so someone would have to keep the alternative language versions of DSL up to date.

It is by and large a thankless task.

If someone is willing to volunteer their time and web storage space, then they should reply here.

I've seen you are making a world map of DSL users. It's obvious DSL needs an easy way to match an user language.
Maybe the solution would be to make .dsl extensions for each language (as the brazillian one that already exists), so each user can download the language he/she needs.
If that's not possible, I'd ask for a better description (tutorial, howto...) of the making of of such .dsl file.
Just my 2 eurocents.
Adios.

Now that is a better idea.

Maybe the brazilian dsl extension can be used as a template for building extensions for other languages.

Yes - this is a good solution, but for this it would be great to have  an english documentation - I am interested to do a german version

I would be interested in making an italian.dsl extension. but that depends on owh much you have to work for it.
I mean..if it's about fluxbox standard menu, it's easy.
but are we talking about translating the menus of each and every program contained in dsl? that's a big work. expecially if you consider you have to do it at every release...

so.. at your disposal, once we state what the standard must be.
:)

Davide, I'm also interested in an italian translation, but more important would be to solve the bug that avoid the typing ot the @ character in firefox with the ita keyb.

Sory for getting late into the discussion. I'm interested in a less problematic thing: being able to type in my own (slovene) language, which means some special caracters. I tried ptbr.dsl, but I don't seem to be able to make it work. when I download it, it does nothing, it doesn't change the keyboard and it doesn't add the special characters (which I'm mainly interested in). I know I'm missing something, but I really don't know what.

Help?

Nino

Hi Nino,
this is what I did to make my German keyboard work:
1. in /opt/bootloacal.sh :
Code Sample
loadkeys de-latin1-nodeadkeys

2. in /home/dsl/.xinitrc :
Code Sample
# AltGr keyboard mapping for Firefox and others
xmodmap -e "remove mod4 = Mode_switch"
xmodmap -e "add mod5 = Mode_switch"

You have to make sure these files are restored each time you boot, either by listing them in .filetool.lst or by using persistent /home and /opt dirs on a harddisk.
Instead of 1. you can also click the DSLpanel > button keyboard and search for the slovene keyboard.
Some applications, however, refuse to display special characters (e.g. Beaver) although they are there! that's why I use the Nedit.uci extension.
More posts: < AltGr key ... >, < Umlaute >

Hope this helps, Jo

Hi all, I'm available for the translation in Italian too.... Davide, why we do not start to translate the menu, not for the application? Somebody can help in giving us some guideline to translate? I'm a windows user, so sorry, I do not know where to start from.. sich...
ciao:D

I seriously want to do the Swedish translation... I painfully miss the internationality on DSL (though I understand the reasons for it to be an English-only distro). DSL would by far be the best distro if international. Any chance for doing the Swedish translation?? Is there a template (I cannot find the much-mentioned Brazilian file pbtr.dsl anywhere) for easifying the work?

Greetings,
geekgirl

Before even trying to approach the software I've translated most of the wiki into spanish.

Wouldn't it do as a start? If you all are willing to work, why not start with the wiki?
