posted in the Docs by nonlinuxexpert -- Well, DSL is brilliant and I believe SaidinUnleashed is an extremely clever guy. But, his advice on installing Grub simply won't do for average jocks like me. Please can he give much, much more detail in plain language without the frills and circumlocution. Secondly, after making a grubbootdisk according to his formula, it didn't work for me on any of the defaulting hard disks that I had tried to install DSL to and was getting the L99 response, no matter what combination of commands I tried. The first line, root (hd0,0) either produced 'partition not found' or something about partition at 0xc. I tried putting the entire booting string, space separated, on a single line and got similarly spurious responses. Some discussion about drive geometry, LBA, etc may also be relevant? It would be appreciated if this could be in plain language, too. To reach the masses, lessons about communicating, that were ignored by the Linux community until recently, now need to be learned. There are millions of putative users waiting for rational guidance from such as S-i-U. We aren't necessarily dumb, just lacking in the penguin department. No. Writing Docs is boring. The way I write is pretty much /exactly/ the way I am. If you don't like it, learn how it works and write a better doc! No offense intended, it's just how it works. And the grub how-to is not intended for fresh newbies.
That's a good thing. I didn't include all the address, etc for 2 reasons. 1. it's boring to me 2. it's confusing to you.
Once again, no offense intended, but lacking penguin = dumb. The sheer fact that you are experimenting means you are smarter than the unwashed M$ masses though. -J.P. |
