I'm for it. I don't like the NES emulator and xpacman a lot.

It is a fun game, and the binary itself isn't too big, but it has nearly 2MBs of xpm image files and a half MB of sound.

The NES emulator may seem large, but it compresses way down to under 50K.

john, cant you remove the sound and the extra skins?

I'll look into it.

Building xpuyopuyo without sound support gives me a reduction in size, and if I then remove the extraneous themes (3dRokz and f-something if I remember rightly) and sounds - they're still installed even if you disable sound support - that gives me a directory of about 970Kb. Compressing with gzip gives me a file of about 237Kb.

John: 3Mb for a NES emulator into under 50Kb? Not bad, not bad at all... :)

Sorry, faulty memory. But I was close.
ls -lh tuxnes
-rwxr-xr-x    1 john     john         4.8M Apr  8 05:30 tuxnes
gzip -9 tuxnes
ls -lh tuxnes.gz
-rwxr-xr-x    1 john     john          88K Apr  8 05:30 tuxnes.gz

please try to put it in the next release man. its only 237KB  the way typhoon did it. :)

I vote for xpuyopuyo. but if tuxnes has to be taken away...then I'd suggest to drop the proposal. tuxnes allows to play tens of games, if you download the roms to your hd...xpuyopuyo is a beautiful, altought single game.
:(

WANT IT NOW !!!

Thumbs down from me.
Think this should be an enhancement script only.

I can think of a lot of better uses for an already compressed 237k that uncompresses out to about 1MB.  For example, gcombust is only 140k uncompressed including a desktop icon.

Maybe an install script would be a better option.

Without sounding too Microsfotyish (is that a word?), my vote for a new game would be some kind of multiple card game program like xpat2.

Klondike Solitaire + much more.  But I assume that size issue is such that it is not worth adding at the expense of some other application like a bitorrent client, for example.

Why dont you use bzip2 instead of gzip? o_O
Posted by TyphoonMentat on April 17 2004,20:57
Well, first of all bzip2 is much slower than gzip - so slow as to make cloop with bzip2 just about unusable. It's not a case of choosing gzip or bzip2 anyway, as cloop compresses everything, and changing cloop compression would bring a whole host of problems, such as alienating all those who are trying to do remasters.
I'd go for an enhancement script myself.
