I would like to see a standard easy to configure GUI or shell script for a fw pre-compiled into the distro, perhaps even a boot-time cheat code to init the fw on startup? Anyone else think this is a viable/wise option?

KNOPPIX had an option to automatically run a shell script from a floppy disk or from a CDROM or other location upon bootup.  Basically, you just put a knoppix.sh file on your floppy disk and added the cheatcode to your syslinux.cfg default settings.

Since DSL is based on knoppix, this might even work as-is.  If not, you can use the backup/restore or myDSL functionality to accomplish the same objectives.  Read up on them to understand how they work.
