Need a SWAP file on hdd to work better !Forum: DSL Ideas and Suggestions Topic: Need a SWAP file on hdd to work better ! started by: Fotograf Posted by Fotograf on Oct. 25 2003,02:17
[B][I] Knoppix 3.3 refused to work on my Notebook with 64mb RAM (ho hdd at that time) but after connecting a 540 mb hddKnoppix offered me a choice: to create a knoppix.swp file sized between 64-128mb - which i did and it worked perfectly afterwards (hdd has FAT16 with 300mb occupied by Win98 out of 540 total) So we would like to see the same feature in the next DSL ! Automatic hdd detection and SWAP creation ! May be it would be possible to remove the DSL cd from the tray and put a musical mp3 CD instead Posted by k-trox on Oct. 28 2003,18:34

you already can read cds if you choose knoppix toram option at bootyou need 128 mega of ram thought it is impossible with 64 mega unless you hd/install, of course. Posted by k-trox on Nov. 08 2003,01:22
up!please, read this post!!!! it`s a great idea!! Posted by KevB on Nov. 14 2003,20:36
Automatic swap partition creation is not a good idea. Surely the whole point of "live" distros is that you can run from the CD and they don't affect the PC in any way. If your going to use a swap partition then you may as well run the whole system from the HD. Posted by minuscule on Jan. 13 2004,01:47
No automatic swap space creation from the live CD but for the HD install, I think that if DSL could keep warning user that they should really create a swap space(either a swap partition or a swap file) if none is detected and memory is tight, that would be a valuable improvement. In my case, with a P1 75MHz and 16Megs of RAM, DSL kept crashing after just a few minutes of browsing with Dillo. I was about to conclude that DSL was not suitable for this machine when I realized that I had no swap space. After the creation of a tiny swap file of just 16Megs, everything went smoothly. BTW, I'll increase the size of the swap file. I just wanted to see what was the minimum memory requirements to have a working DSL machine capable of doing at least the basic stuff. Now, I really like DSL. It definitely has all reasons to exist in these years of gigabytes and gigahertz. Long live the megas! |
