Cure for disconnecting ADSL providerForum: DSL Ideas and Suggestions Topic: Cure for disconnecting ADSL provider started by: Ose_Mobuju Posted by Ose_Mobuju on Mar. 06 2004,13:45
I want to use the Monkey webserver together with e.g. DynIP to get a homepage with more file space than is possible to get cheap with an ordinary provider. I have one problem though, the provider detects no activity on my ADSL link and disconnects the line.I wish that some version of cron was a part of DSL, to be able to write a script that simulates some activity. Alternatively, any other small utility that is available could be used but I dont know any. In this way it would be possible to make a webserver on a retired computer with one cd drive for DSL and another for a CD-RW or even a DVD-RW that contains your home pages. If something bad happens it is then very easy to restart again with the possible vulnerability fixed and the home page on the RW disk can be managed offline with another faster computer. Write a small shell script that "Pings" a web site once every X minutes.I believe that there is a "sleep" command that you could put in your script to make it recycle again and again. If not, build a simple one time script like: !/bin/sh ping www.yahoo.com exit and use cron to run it on regular intervals. Good Luck. |
