SMP disabled kernel

There are a few laptops out there (I'm sure mainly Dell) that choke when confronted with an smp enabled kernel. Really, the only choice at the moment for those people in the live-CD catagory (myself included) is to run a full remastered version of knoppix with the appropriate changes to the kernel.

It's not too bad of an option, but when running the laptop in a distcc environment the knoppix bloat does catch up. What are the chances of a non-smp kernel option in the future?
