How tough would it be (I want to tighten my kids down) to have the DSL CD boot up to a screen with JUST the browser and and IRC client? I would also like VNC running sinceI can check on them via my Treo 600 cell phone.

Thanks!

The LiveCD would require the "restore=hdxx" command at boot time for this to work..

If from HD install, simply move/delete all of the icons and
.lnk files from the .xtdesktop folder that you don't want on screen.

Check that you have the "enhance" line uncommented in your
.xinitrc line so the enhanced desktop will come up automatically.

You can edit the /usr/bin/enhance file if you want to remove
the slit, bbpager, etc...

If DSL 0.7.3 opens to the desktop automatically on your system,
then removing the unwanted items from .xtdesktop should do it..

Put the vnc startup command in your bootlocal.sh file.

Again, if running from LiveCD, you'll need to make sure several
lines are in your filetool.lst, like /home/dsl/.xtdesktop, etc...,
and backup your system..  Then, when rebooting, use the
restore=hdxx line in your bootup options...

If the restore=hdxx line isn't used , your back to the defaults,
so no lockdown/security to be found there..

Otherwise, remaster the DSL cd altering the files discussed, and
" rolling your own" version of DSL..

Other users here probably have WAY more info than I have
on this subject....

Don't forget to remove any unwanted programs from your Fluxbox menu.

You can edit the list via:

scite /home/dsl/.fluxbox/menu

Hope this helps.

There is a custom Morphix CD to do this.  Look for the Firefox2.iso on the download site.

I think the major difference is the fact that the firefox iso for Morphix is nearly double the size of the DSL cd.  Is firefox just that big, or are other portions of the distro bloated?

Also, this again begs the question, how do you strip out the unwanted programs from DSL?

I mean, okay, yes, it's a really cool distrobution with all of the tools I would need as an administrator, but I'd really like to get it sized down as much as possible.  Ultimately, I'm planning on mounting all of the necessary pieces via NFS, and pxe booting the machine instead of requiring media.

The firefox CD, just has the browser, no IRC client.  They use the full Gnu-Utils and DSL uses busybox, that's one main difference in size and the dpkg cache is probably still there.  I'm sure it could be stripped further.

If you want to remaster DSL, you can follow most of the Howto at Knoppix.net for remastering.  Just google for knoppix.net remaster and it will be the top link.

I wasn't asking how to remaster, thanks, done that.  My main point here is that it's problematic at best to strip out the apps one at a time and test over and over.  There should be either a how-to on this, or list/log of some kind for each app.

Hey, keep in mind that ctrl-alt-backspace will still drop you to a console where "sudo su" will still get you root priveliges.

I hope your kids aren't that savvy yet.
