Ndiswrapper on DSLForum: DSL Ideas and Suggestions Topic: Ndiswrapper on DSL started by: Mariusz Posted by Mariusz on Aug. 17 2004,18:55
I need Ndiswrapper. This is very small and very useful software. I ask for Ndiswrapper in next releases of DSL. This is very important for me.

I agree. I just picked up a nice Averatec 3225 laptop last weekend, and DSL runs great on it, except for the wireless, which won't work under linux without ndiswrapper, apparently. Is there any way to run it from a live cd without having to do a complete remaster? From what I've read online, it appears to require a kernal recompile, and I dont think my linux skills are up for it...

Wow!!!! I didnt know that something like this existed....if you check there is a debian and RPM packages pre-built and can either be made into a .dsl or added on with the update program on a harddrive install I do believe...but I think this would be an incredibly invaluable addon (as long as it isnt toooo big, if it is then a .dsl is the awnser)Brian AwPhuch Posted by TyphoonMentat on Aug. 26 2004,21:35
It's about 100K, I believe, and only about 70 compressed.

DSL is perfect for my laptop (pretty much the only distro that'll run well on a 200mhz P1 with 2gb drive) except that it needs ndiswrapper. Please please please! It would make DSL a way more useful/universal distro.Even just a precompiled tar.gz that we can use in a hard-drive install. That shouldn't take more than 10 min of your time (yeah right....) Actually, that was my question to begin with. What would be required to get ndiswrapper installed on a DSL system? It looks like it would require an HD install and a custom kernel compilation. (Thought I dont know about 0.8, since I'm using 0.7.3) Anybody know any more? Posted by Alex on Sep. 05 2004,18:29
Well, I assume you'd need a full development environment, which won't fetch on apt-get on DSL... also the kernel source, and a full kernel compile (would take like 10hr on my laptop) but searching this forum I found something about being able to compile modules on a version of Knoppix with the same kernel. You could probably drop them in and they would work? But only with a HD install, I bet.My desktop machine is packed (just moved) but when I get it out, i'll give it a shot Posted by TyphoonMentat on Sep. 05 2004,19:13
Just use Knoppix 3.4 to compile ndiswrapper and copy it over - I think...

damn, I guess that means that the knoppix iso i downloaded (i think it's the one that matches 0.7.x) is the wrong one for 0.8.I only have access to a very slow wired connection so it looks like i'm out of luck unless someone else compiles the module. Posted by cbagger01 on Sep. 06 2004,19:22
Specifically, it was mentioned that the version of knoppix that you are looking for is version 3.4 5-17-2004

Would just dropping the .dep build work??Brian AwPhuch Posted by Alex on Sep. 08 2004,02:08
Well, i got a friend to download the appropriate knoppix distro for me... compiled it all after some messing about with remounting pieces of knoppix on my HD...made 2 packages, had to dpkg --extract them onto my DSL intallation... and they work fine except for they can't load the drivers, "failed to allocate DMA coherent memory. Windows driver requested 204800 bytes of un-cached memory" but that might be my drivers or the very small amount of RAM I have on the laptop. You guys want the packages anyways? I have nowhere to upload them for now, i'll email them to anyone who can post them. Posted by ripcrd6 on Sep. 08 2004,13:49
send them to extensions{at}damnsmalllinux{dot}org

Sent em off... good luck. Well, actually, if they won't load for you either, that's good for me... because it means i screwed up the compile, and it could still work on my machine.

the email bounced back... I can't get the modules to load, anyways. Any other interested parties want to give it a shot?

This is Alex from above, finally got an account. I did finally get the modules to load, I'm posting via my TI ACX111 card right now!Made a thread in the network section, so check that out if Ndiswrapper is something you need! Posted by AwPhuch on Sep. 16 2004,15:22
So the Ndiswrapper is a .dsl addon then correct? Brian AwPhuch Posted by A-Rod on Sep. 16 2004,18:11
unfortunately it's two .deb packages and will only work for a hdinstall I believe.I'm really just using DSL as a very lightweight Debian for my laptop, so I don't know anything about making a .dsl - perhaps someone else can make one out of my .deb packages. They depend on debian/unstable perl for some reason, and seem to need it to install properly - no idea why, that's just what happened when compiling under Knoppix. |
