It seems to me that the usual complaints about the lightweight window managers like fluxbox and icewm is they don't contain a full desktop environment and are just window managers.

Other than bloatware like KDE & GNOME, it seems that XFCE is the only well known alternative desktop environment that is usuable on some older computers (Pentium II class or higher clock Pentium 1's).

But there is an interesting alternative with updated release published on Freshmeat:

The Equinox Desktop Environment (EDE), which is based an the eFLTK extended Fast and Light ToolKit.

In theory, it should run well on older hardware.  It also will please those who want a desktop environment / window manager that is easy to learn for old MSWindows users.

Unfortunately, they don't have any precompile Debian packages available or I would check it out.

I don't feel like wrestling with compiling, but maybe someone else want to check it out or even maybe build a *.dsl for it.

interesting, thx. It looks ugly though but if it's fast and light it looks like a good choice for windows users.

Yeah it does look a *lot* like windows...i probably won't use it much myself, but i think lots of windows users will like it.

Current status: It mostly works in DSL.  I received a few errors that need to be investigated, the menu needs to be modified for the apps in DSL, and i need to examine things like the control panel to see that they work properly within DSL.  The full package extracted and not stripped is just under 6mb, including some required libs.  I'm guessing it will be closer to 3 mb uncompressed once the docs are removed and binaries are stripped....so it's pretty tiny for a DE.

Man, I could switch my wife to that and she wouldn't even realise....
:D

I agree about EDE.  Personally, I prefer Fluxbox and would continue using it but EDE looks quite usable if you are a Windows convert.

I doubt that it will ever have the eye candy of Gnome or KDE but with the right themes can look quite good just like Fluxbox can.
