I love D.S.L.!I have used it at work to rescue data off of cheap standard issue Compaq laptops that have failed to boot up into Windows. It is, however limited by the read-only ability for the NT file system. I have been booting into RAM and mounting the file system, and I am only able to create .iso images from the leftover memory, and burn CD's. Some Outlook .PST files have been too big to rescue from the HDD, and ERD Commander will not burn discs. Any chance that future editions will fully support NTFS? I would expect that when the standard kernel NTFS driver gets stable write ability, dsl will follow suit with the next major rebuild.Who knows when this will happen. In the meantime, you can use "Captive NTFS" if the Microsoft Windows NT/2000/XP driver files are still intact on the target system. I would expect that "Captive NTFS" is too big for addition to the DSL cd. However, recent versions of knoppix do come with a captive NTFS install script. Unfortunately, the knoppix CD doesn't fit into your wallet unless you have a huge wallet. :-) |
