Hello, I am writing on behalf of our group at www.ultimatebootcd.com Over at < http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ultimatebootcd > we are discussing enhancements. With 55 utilities on one ISO (a 45mb torrent d/load) we really need a multimedia help docs viewer... Someone suggeted adding a browser, I suggested a Arachne/Bart combo, but the group wants to stay away from any M$ content. Thats fine, so the idea now is to use a Links/BasicLinux combo... Here is my question:UBCD still lacks good emergency web/ftp/samba access and the ability to write to NTF$ volumes - wouldn't it be better to swap BasicLinux/Links for for an "empty-as-possible" version of DSL? Are there other GUI options smaller and/or better? Apps to reduce would be: - Glinks or Dillo (which adheres to more web standards?) - Scite, Zile, Paint, Xcalc, ABS - Naim, Links,SQlite, PIM, Netdir, gphone - All games BTW, the ultimate goal is to not only do this, but also to combine the results on a free BizCard with less than 20 Open-source, "best-of-breed" utilities already found on UBCD. (Now that will really be some CD for a techs wallet!) - Cliff We can call it DSBC (Damn Small Boot CD) Posted by BillH on April 11 2004,11:55
Wouldn't it be EVEN BETTER to ask if you can join John in developing a version IN PARALLEL with DSL? Like you said, a DS-UBCD. I mean, if you just gut the apps out of DSL and reload it with your stuff (not a seriously tough job), you are just forking DSL and then you have all the development stuff on your hands (a seriously tough job). There has to be a better way than that. Posted by hasty on April 11 2004,16:11
Take a look at the rescue version of Feather Linux if Rob has it still listed on his download page. Its another fork of DSL. < http://featherlinux.berlios.de > ...... it a bolshie server an not always accessable. Posted by cmatt77 on April 11 2004,18:21
Hi again, sorry for not adding detail - I'll try:UBCD is already a 106-meg ISO (compressed to 45-meg so MajorGeeks and Torrent volunteers save bandwidth). You may consider it an ISO of boot images, each of which, has it's own fame - unmodified, but carefully scripted and tested by Victor Chew to launch via CDShell. As he says "it's his hobby.." and the group members support him. >Wouldn't it be EVEN BETTER to ask if you can join John in developing a version IN PARALLEL with DSL? I misunderstand 'version' here. My thought is that a current stable DSL, slightly lightened, with a disclaimer to such is all that's warranted to keep things light with no continous developement required. > Like you said, a DS-UBCD. Sorry for exuberance, in my zeal to help, I get off-track or desviado. > I mean, if you just gut the apps out of DSL and reload it with your stuff.. Our stuff on the DSL image? No, it's not our work, our stuff (tech help docs) would just be in a browsable folder on the container CD. > you are just forking DSL.. No, I talk of a mod to an existing release. Again, that's the reason for this topic. If concensus here is viable, then sure, I will present it to Victor Chew (UBCD lead). It is not my part to ask John, I'm not at that level. >There has to be a better way than that. I haven't found it yet and Feather-Linux is 64meg. At present, UBCD includes a boot image with text only web access, but no PPPoE. Clearly, what's there is not in the same league as DSL and would scare many Win-techs to even try downloading missing driver's, etc.. IMHO, adding a DSL boot image to UBCD would be an eye-opener to many Win-tech's and further some Linux experience to otherwise closed minds.. Posted by TyphoonMentat on April 12 2004,19:04
A few points:Firstly, Feather Linux is normally 64Mb, but the console-only rescue edition is only 50Mb. Secondly, Feather isn't a fork of DSL - it's a project with similar motives and a similar size. If the developer can't be picky, who can? Posted by roberts on April 12 2004,19:43
There are many small distros whose roots have come from DSL and some still come here everyday to learn more. All should recognize DSL but some don't. Some even remove all references to DSL and their orginal authors contributions. Here is the latest list. < children and relatives of DSL > For a security rescue toolkit you might want to look at INSERT Posted by TyphoonMentat on April 12 2004,20:26
Hmm, Robert, resorting to subtle insults isn't exactly the best way to say something... Oh well, each to his own.
Posted by Dan on April 12 2004,23:03
I don't get it? I thought Feather was a fork? So many of the applications are the same. Even that tabbed and SSL version of Dillo is the same, and I can't find it anywhere else.

Typhoon, Interesting response because I didn't single anyone out. What's the saying, "if the shoe fits..".

Hi, yes I have looked at Insert but most group members have been asking for DSL (due, maybe to superior hardware support?). Many corporations use UB because Victor takes a serious view on Open Source and Free content. That's also why a lot of Bart's-Boot stuff never gets included since it has MS content. With the games off DSL it would likely get added, but we have none to help in this area (Any volunteers?). Like I said earlier, UB doesn't seek to steal thunder from anyone, it's just a good group of launchable CD images on one CD that aspires to add some documentation and a way to reach out. Tonight I have news - Victor Chew has decided to use FreeDOS and Arachne 1.73 as another boot image to add on the 2.3 release. (but AFAIK, Arachne has no PPPoE support). Sadly, at this point UBCD will still not offer anyone NTFS write support. That's why I'm here listening in, I have much to learn. By viewing how long you guys have been here, I consider it fun to also listen to the sibling rivalry - kind of like family eh? - Cliff P.S. I going to look close at 'Insert' as you suggested, thanks. I'll be back! Posted by hasty on April 15 2004,08:46
Linux is like Ol'time religion, if you're not a believer, your damned. Check the slackware newsgroup Did I say fork I meant axalotl........ Posted by cmatt77 on May 08 2004,15:38
UBCD is now at < http://ubcd.sourceforge.net >Victor Chew is still project lead, but he has now handed linux inclusions over to Scot. From our last posting, it looks like Scot will use a very slighly modified Feather Linux to submit for inclusion on UBCD v2.3 (Feather omits the games and has captive NTFS...) Pitty that noone from DSL wanted to assist...Would have been nice to see DSL and another great CD Utilities CD team up... Brian AwPhuch Posted by cmatt77 on May 31 2004,00:18
UBCD 2.3 was just released, and now has 85 utilities on one bootable MiniCD. But for those that were interested in the original topic.. Brian, maintaining and improving just one distribution is an enormous about of work. If people want to build from DSL and start their own project they are free to do so -- many have. We have to focus because both Robert and I have limited time. Posted by cmatt77 on Nov. 26 2004,04:30

I have made a boot cd from ubcd, dsl and movix without removing software from ubcd or dsl and still having more than enough space to put a few .dsl packages and other bootdisks. Works beautifully and still easily fits onto a 210mb 8cm CDR. Posted by softgun on Jan. 05 2005,18:28
IF UBCD is a fork, why are all these posts coming in here? This is for DSL ides and suggestions. Forks can have their own maling lists, surely?
Posted by muzak24h on May 02 2005,15:31
Wow are you able to do that on version 3.3 and post it to the the < UBCD forum > ? I will run the Torrent for as long as you want. Of course you know this is the objective of why I (cmatt77) opened this thread over a year ago. BTW: Softgun, this is not a fork! it's a compilation...(just people helping people). ------------------------------------------------------- Victor Chew - Wrapping-up UBCD 3.3: - Updated CDShell to V2.1.6. - Updated BCDW to V2.0a1. - The FreeDOS-based boot disks have been updated to V3.25. Thanks to Erwin Veermans for the contribution. - INSERT LINUX has been updated to include 5 different bootup modes. Thanks to Charles Appel for the contribution. - Updated Drive Fitness Test to V4.02. - Updated g4u to V2.0. - Updated MemTest86+ to V1.55. Thanks to Travis McMurry for the update. - Updated IBM Feature Tool to V1.97. Thanks to SebastienG for the update. - Updated MaxBlast to V4.0. Thanks to Eric Auer for suggesting this. - Removed Ontrack Data Advisor Free Edition because it has expired and will no longer run. Thanks to Russ for informing me. - Removed Disk Image Writer until it can support IGZ format. AutoClave has been discontinued and will no longer be updated by its author. Thanks to SebastienG for the update. - The floppy version of RIP has been discontinued. Thanks to SebastienG for the update. - Fixed HUTIL to run from RAM disk instead of CDROM because disk diagnostic function writes a log file to disk. Thanks to Mark Holtz for reporting the problem. - Fixed version number of Smart BootManager to read V3.7.1 instead of V3.7R1. - Timeout checking is now performed only in the main menu, not submenus. - Main menu now count down the number of minutes to booting first harddisk. Thanks to Erwin Veermans for the idea. - Reintroduced PowerMax V4.09, as recommended by Scott Cooper: "Keep Maxtor's 4.09 test as well as the latest (4.21) as Maxtor intentionally crippled the newer versions to not run on non-Maxtor drives. I have been using Maxtor's 4.09 to double-check other tests/drives. I've found it more useful than DFT, which also (as of 3.x) runs on other brands." - Modified UBCD to use [F8] and [F9] to boot from HDD so that it is similar to the Windows boot option menu. Thanks to Scott Cooper for the suggestion. - Run a separate timeout.scn when main menu times out to allow for easier customization. Thanks to Scott Cooper for the suggestion. I've tried merging DSL, UBCD(+INSERT), GEEXBOX, RIP, Debian netinstall and my favouritre packages. But I really couldn't find out how to do it right. It would never boot up =/. Anyone knows how to explain clearly how to do it? grtz Posted by muzak24h on May 15 2005,23:53
