Can we have a really lightweight DSL version?Just only kernel + Xwindow(Xvesa/Xfbdev) + GNU Util + Fluxbox + hardware detection and make other apps as .DSL(since DSL repository is getting bigger and better) So we can customize as much as we need. I don't know if this's really hardwork for John. I try to apt-get uninstall as much as I can but there are some appz that did not install via apt-get method which I have no idea how to keep track. Would be nice to have a DSL core, then have the .dsl addons...This way John would only have to worry about the core release (less programs and stuff) and could streamline the scripting and whatnot... There aint much you can take off of without it getting waaaay to small (DSL floppy hehe) Brian AwPhuch Posted by zoloto on June 30 2004,08:30
With linux, if there is core functionality and the rest are put into the myDSL directory that would be awesome! With that said, if the hd-install could be a little smoother without having to redo options at every boot, that would kick ass as well. But I'm going to put my money where my mouth is and try and accomplish that feat alone. If anyone else is doing that message me here! So yeah... myDSL core.iso would be awesome. a true mini 25MB w/X.org,fluxbox UNCOMPRESSED distro on CD... beautiful! ----zoloto Posted by chibiace on July 09 2004,10:05
yes you'd want a folder on the cd for .dsl files, and a program to customize the um menu thing easier (unless there is already a way to do this).i dont really want most of those apps, so really its just useless. and there doesnt seem to be any easy way to remove them. Downlaod the whitebox.dsl file and install. It will let you edit the menu without getting dirty in the text file! Chris Posted by chibiace on July 09 2004,18:07
but the programs will still be installed though wont they? Posted by ripcrd6 on July 13 2004,16:46
This would be an awesome idea. In a way like the original idea for Morphix. Make Linux iso modular and that way multi-purpose for whatever the users need. Look at how many custom Morphix distros there are now. Tons. If it is just a matter of dropping your favorite .dsl files into the iso, it's easy.Time to trim the fat again. If the build script could download or let you point to the directory with the iso, pick .dsl files from a list that is generated by doing htdig at the .dsl repository, then download and place them on the iso, then that would really rock! I think we are already there. IMHO it is better to have a realy useful base system. And the base system is already smaller than any other Knoppix derived system. Then by selecting which extensions you want, you have a system your way. You set the size limitation, and made for your needs, whether it is a liveCD, a flash device, a usb device or the "old" traditional hard drive install.

Given the difficulty in buying credit card-sized CD-Rs in stores, it is likely that the more common "tiny" DSL storage medium of today is either:(1) a 64MB flash drive OR (2) a 180MB mini CD-R or something even bigger. Given that the "base" is under 50MB, that leaves room on even tiny storage medium for lots of *.dsl/*.tar.gz style additions. And if you run out of room simply use a second CD for your *.dsl files or buy a bigger flash drive. They are often sold for under $20.00US nowadays. Posted by frodo on July 14 2004,11:36
